The Boilermaker is only a few weeks away.

I was stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of N. Genesee Street and Oriskany Street. When I looked to my right I saw The Distance Running Hall of Fame. The wire s still hanging off the front of the building where the Boilermaker clock was before it blew down last year. I thought to myself that this is what people see when they enter downtown Utica. A closer look at the area revealed grass growing up through the sidewalks adjacent to the curb. It looked terrible. Isn't this part of the Bagg's Square re-development that everyone is so high on? They can't spend $10 for a jug of Roundup and the half hour it would take to apply it? Couldn't the Hall of Fame put up a banner or something to mask the eyesore that is that upper fašade?

I drove a few blocks south and turned right on Columbia Street. Anyone who's been in that area on Boilermaker Sunday knows that many people park on Columbia Street during the event. Probably many of those are out of town people who stay at the North Genesee Street motels and put their cars there for easy access after running/watching the race. Anyway, Columbia Street is stereotypical urban blight. The graffiti, the broken sidewalks, the grass and weeds growing up through the broken sidewalks, the rotted plywood hanging from deserted buildings and on and on. That's the Utica thee people see.

One would think that with the exposure the city gets from this event that they would take pains to put lipstick on the pig. Instead outsiders are left with this terrible impression of Utica. Don't city officials and the race officials realize this?

Drive or walk the route I described and imagine yourself being a stranger here for the first time. Would you likely want to come back? I doubt it. Say what you want about former Utica Mayor Ed Hanna but he understood the importance of appearance.

All very valid and truthful points but when there's simply no money to do the work unless someone volunteers it's just simply not going to done.

Maybe the Mayor could do a neighborhood sweep down there...

We're talking about a few gallons of Roundup and a couple of hours of time. Is the DPW and Parks departments so busy they can manage that. There was a media blitz last week about a grant that paid for painting and removing graffiti. It was all over the news. Politicians taking credit for the grant and volunteers telling us what a good thing they did. They couldn't include Columbia Street in that effort?

I don't buy the no money excuse. It's lack of insight into what really matters when it comes to appearance. The blame for many of the problems that Utica has belongs to Utica. This is certainly one.

This scandal still has them in shock, like a death. It will take a while for the news to filter down to the chicken coop. Maybe after Americas got talent does the big showdown they'll get up to speed on the bad news.
Robert T Oliveira is still on drugs because of this.
