Region not a shoo-in for cybersecurity college

In January, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed the creation of a college focused on emergency preparedness, homeland security and cybersecurity.

Local officials and others from across the state got interested and started to highlight the reasons their areas should get the school.

But in his budget, completed April 1, Cuomo did not designate a location for the school.

Additionally, neither the process by which the location will be determined, nor a timeframe for such a process, has been decided, a spokeswoman for the governor’s office said.

There is, however, a $15 million allocation in the state’s capital budget, she said.

A Mohawk Valley delegation met recently with the governor’s office to make the case that the area is the perfect fit for the college, and submitted a proposal to create a Center for Excellence in Cybersecurity, Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security.

Among the advantages they cite:

ä Oneida County is home to the

state Emergency Preparedness Center in Oriskany, in which the state recently invested $42 million.

ä Utica College offers a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity and information assurance.

ä The Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome has long been involved in developing high-tech systems in homeland security.

ä The nanotechnology initiatives in Marcy will add to the computer-related brainpower in the area.

“We were doing cybersecurity in the Mohawk Valley before it was a word,” said Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, D-Utica.“The state would be well served by utilizing existing assets in our region for such a college.”

A team, including area college presidents, has gotten together to put the area’s best foot forward, said state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome.

“I think if we continue to work as a team and emphasize what we have and what we have done, I think we can make a strong argument,” he said.

Also, Griffo said, the region could partner with other places in the state that have relevant assets.

This is, by no means, a done deal.
