Does that include elected officials and county department heads?

Then why does the legislators and pacenti get together and pass some reasonable laws to make it a chalange to get the cash. Seems like its easier to get welfare in this county.they want the population up to get more federal cash. Bad formula and the republicans running things are bad thinkers.

I'd like to see a further break down of those percentages. Blacks make up 15% of Utica's population but i'd be curious to see what % they take up out of the overall 45% of welfare.

If you count all government employees and welfare the takers take more than 50%.

There are more than half takers in utica. Enjoy.

We have a large immigrant population. They depend heavily on social services and may be a root cause of the increase in cost. I don't think color plays a part. It's not racial. I think poverty in this area is an equal opportunity thing.

Why would this matter except to a racist? Is it worse if a black man is on public assistance compared to a white man on public assistance?

To them it is. They spend 65% of their outgoing taxes on public safety, but feel good if they get to rant incoherently about the 4-5% they spend on the "coons".

Ain't that the typical oootica for you? Kind of explains their "results" there in uterus.

I agree. Matters not. But... It's all about how someone goes about getting on public assistance. I was laid off from a job a couple years ago and went to the county building for help. I was very thankful to have gotten help for the 4 months I wasn't working. But many other groups of people expect help or demand help from the county building. There is a difference in that. Any race can be on welfare or food stamps. That's fine. But it's how that person acts is what makes a difference.

This provides some indication:

If you look at the data tab it will give actual percentages for Oneida County. In general over 40% of those that are black, asian or hispanic ethnicity are below the poverty level. 12% of the caucasian/white group in Oneida County is below the poverty level.

You have to look for a job and want one to get out of poverty. There is your problem.

I didn't start this thread to discuss the race of people on public assistance. It's obvious that we can't have half of the county on the free ride no matter who they are. Maybe the next few bus loads of immigrants can be sent elsewhere? This isn't sustainable

The figure he used was how many people in the county had asked about getting assistance last year, and it was 45 percent. That has to be over 100,000 people based on our population! I think the problem is you have to be very poor to get help, even in New York. The average retail or APAC job around here only pays enough for people to scrape by. The first time a big medical bill or crisis hits, these people are in trouble. So 12 percent of whites are below the poverty line....but there probably are plenty more that are in debt because they're not making it. It's actually reached the point where if the best you can do is a $25,000 a year job, you're almost better off not working. The reason so many people are leaving the area is that there aren't enough jobs that will comfortably support a family around here anymore.

Yes, but it's nice to get the entire story. If the majority of the cases are immigrants then this is a huge problem.
