I think the problem here is defining "punishment". If the coach was told not to "punish" the kids who went to ROTC boot camp I don't consider sitting them out punishment since it has been policy since he has been there no practice no play. Most NFL coaches have the same policy.
But if these players were forced to run laps or some extra drills as a "punishment" then the coach crossed the line. I don't believe he did any such thing.
So lets define what "do not punish " meant.

If that is really what you believe, than your child or someone is misinforming you. There was never any announcement at school. My children attend the school. One plays on the football team. everything you just said is not true, there was no announcement. How ridiculous to think the school would announce over the speakers "don't concern yourself, go to ROTC trip and Coach Abraham will play you, I've told him to do so". Anna Mae cannot make any such statement, she cannot or she opens the school up for lawsuit over injury. This is so foolish.....
There was never any doubt that the kids who missed a week of practice would not play. Crystal clear.
If you are not Gilroy, than you know him. Don't believe a word he says. I had to watch him and his antics in baseball for years. If he gets this coach fired, how do you think that affects the football and basketball program? Comment on that please....
Why was he suspended then do you think?

Because a few parents made some noise about their sons not getting in the game? Hardly. I think they were rightfully upset because they understood that there would be no penalty for attending boot camp but at the core I don't think that is why he was suspended.

I don't think it was crystal clear to anyone who's children were told that there would be no penalty for attending boot camp.

The lawsuit idea is ridiculous and it's just a convenient cover for trying to explain away the insubordination.

I think he should have been fired for insubordination because no matter what you think you know there was a pronouncement made that there would be no penalty imposed on players from and sport that went to boot camp. You need to look into that a little further.

Why do you think he's been suspended?

If any coach is fired it wouldn't matter a lick to most people. It's a school not a football factory.

NDFAN. It is clear that you very close to the matters. In fact, I believe that your son is on the team. He probably isn't very good and therefore you feel the need to issue statements on this site which somehow makes you feel better and makes you think your son is better than he really is.

I think that the position of not playing is somehow a "punishment" is a misrepresentation of fact. This is not penalty. It is an enforcement of a policy that has been in place for 10 years.

Like it or not, the sister or school board do not run the football team, the coach does.

The problem here is that Gilroy did not run across a yes man in Abraham. He ran across a man with dignity, courage, principle and a set of balls. Now that Abraham hasn't backed down he's got a problem. Because Abraham will never take it out n a kid r player. He's got too much class and supports his players through thick and thin.

The real problem from the schools perspective is that they want to call not playing as a form of punishment or a penalty. When the coach doesn't implement it as a penalty or punishment.

The age old habit of administration knuckling under to self important, big ego parents has gone public in abig way. Whereas in the past this policy has infected some of the ND family, this time it has gone 'viral' on social media. ND may never recover from this.
The polarizing of students, faculty, parents and the public will never be the same.

I love when I get the recommendations from Notre Dame and the recommender forgets to change the student name. It's the same letter for every kid with just the name changed. Pathetic excuse for a school.

I think he ran across was an egocentric, self important football coach who thought that the rules didn't apply to him. He was wrong as are you.

Do you do everything you are told? Well, I guess you must seeing your comments. The rest of the sensible population makes choices (especially when the safety of our children come into play) on responsibility, safety, accountability, etc, etc... A coach is responsible for his team is he not??? Does he not know the sensible and safe way to run his team? And here's my biggest question to you- WHEN OR IF YOU ARE GIVEN AN ORDER THAT COULD POTENTIALLY PUT CHILDREN IN HARMS WAY- would you do it?? No well- adjusted, conscience-driven, responsible, respectful, and honorable coach would! If he played those boys and one of them injured THEMSEVES or their team-mates can you imagine the REAL mess ND would be in then??? With lawsuits and people ready to make someone else pay for their stupidity these days- coach made a decision to do the right thing long before this whim of an "order" came up.

i wouldn't do a pennies worth of business with gilroy and anna mae should step down . what a hypocrite. if you have a problem with a coach don't retain him next year. its that simple. as far as gilbert goes , he road the pine to.
