There's truly not a lot of food better than a nice piece of fresh tomato pie. Wish they had it here in Albany.

Tomato pie is a terrible thing. That there could be a "best" tomato pie is debatable.

As best as I can tell it is nothing more than a doughy base with a slather of bland tomato sauce, paste or whatever it is sparingly topped with a ceremonial blessing of Parmesan cheese of dubious provenance.

Served cold, from a greasy white box that has lingered on the counter all day at room temperature.

Formerly a source of inexpensive carbohydrates for the working poor it is now beyond contempt even considering food by modern standards.

Tomato pie is truly an awful thing and an insult to the good Italian "red sauce" cooking that is so prevalent in Utica.

Asking who makes the best tomato pie in Utica is no different than asking who makes the best "lutefisk" in Minnesota.

The answer is the same, they are awful, foul and crappy foods so there can't be a best unless it is the best of the worst.

There is a lot of good food to be had in Utica but tomato pie is not one of them.

My tomato pie is the best! Home made dough, freshly made sauce from my homegrown tomatoes and herbs, with very flavorful Italian cheeses. Every Sunday - can't beat it or get it anywhere else.

Hey Sticks,

As I said "of dubious provenance" not to mention that there is so little of it that it adds nothing to the crap that is "tomato pie".

Awful, awful stuff. Not fit for human consumption. Its Utica's version of Haggis, lutefisk or any of the other repellent foods that people around the world think is great.

If you want to make it even worse you might want to wash it down with some of that "Adirondack" "vodka" that they make over on the west side. That stuff is terrible as well.

I can say that I made the mistake of bringing a box of tomato pie to work here in Albany. Now every time I go home I'm expected to bring tomato pie in and it gets devoured. Lol

Try Sciortino's on Broadway (the old Miss Albany Diner), Napoli's on Guilderland Ave. in Rotterdam, Perecca's on Jay St. in Schenectady or Peppino's on Rt. 7 in Duanesburg.
