Get rid of the Utica postmark already. It's embarassing to have this city's postmark on my outgoing cards and letters. I have nothing but shame for Utica--hate it here. I'm moving away for good come July.

Yeah, they are so efficient in Utica, the mail carriers have less and less volume to even deliver. 10 carriers all congregate at the North Utica Burger King for 1.5 to 2 hours every day. One letter carrier even hides out in the Candlewyck lane apt. lots, frittering away an hour "on break" because there's not enough mail to deliver. I love how letter carriers in Utica all seem to slowly drive back to 100 Pitcher St at 5:00pm, making it seem like they 'just finished' their routes at quittin' time.

It might be a good thing to eliminate the Utica postmark and replace it with Syracuse. That way people would know that Utica is not really that far away from the rest of civilization.

Having a distribution center in Utica is about as useful as having a post office in each village/town.

Why are there soo many employees getting paid huge amounts of money and getting a federal pension to do the same thing that the paper boy does.

Then you wonder why the price of postage goes up each year just to get junk mail that you end up having to pay to throw away.

Except the distribution center in Utica sorts and sends out the mail to 133 different towns every night not just Utica, any zip code that starts with 133,134, 135 goes out of Utica every morning. The price of a stamp going up 2 cents or more, that really buts a dent in my lifestyle. How about gas , cable, phone , no issues there, just worry about those stamps, just think if I mailed 200 letters a year it would cost me an extra $4.00 for the year.

The Post Office is funding by everyone's tax dollars. The Post Office isn't paying a post master $100k a year from selling stamps and postage.

So not sure how you are only paying an extra $4 a year to fund all the employees at a Utica Distribution center, while all that mail could've been sorted 50 miles away in Syracuse.

When you have to send an important letter, who still relies on the post office to get it there?

Heck, as the saying goes "If you can't beat em... JOIN EM" $weet!
And the postmaster generals jaw hits the floor as the thousands of Uticans flock to the doors and ask "Where's the application? I wanna job! Hire me! Yo!"
And when they finally stop delivering on Saturdays - EXTRA $WEET! Bonus yo!

AHEM. It's more like $857,000 thank you very much. What do we customers get for this money? A proposal for 5 day delivery instead of 6! WOW!

You also forget each Post Office has it's own Post Master who makes around 100k a year depending how many years he/she has in.

The Post Office has not taken any tax dollars since 1971. I would respond to your second point , but it does not make any sense ?

The USPS is NOT self-sustaining; it DOES receive tax dollars from its $15 billion line-of-credit with the US Treasury to pay its bills. See below:

The Post Office is supposed to pay for itself, but in recent years has been covering its losses by borrowing from the US Treasury. But now the Post Office "is nearing its $15 billion borrowing limit with the U.S. Treasury and has unfunded pension and retiree health obligations and other liabilities of about $90 billion" reads the latest GAO report on the USPS.

Looks like the USPS got a BIG BAILOUT in 2010!

It was worth about $4 billion, courtesy of "Harlem's Finest" Charlie 'Tax Cheat' Rangel.

Labor costs are killing the Post Office.

Wages and benefits make up 80 percent of its expenses. About 85 percent of its employees are covered by union contracts, and many receive benefits beyond those of other federal workers.

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Labor Union agreements force the Post Office to:

--Maintain MORE full-time employees than it needs;

--DENY managers flexibility in assigning tasks (like having a retail window clerk deliver mail);

--FORBID the Post Office from outsourcing any city delivery routes;

--Give about 500,000 employees total protection from layoffs; and

--Pay a MORE GENEROUS SHARE of employees' health and life insurance premiums than most other agencies.

SOUNDS LIKE UTICA, ROME & ONEIDA COUNTY TOWNS AND VILLAGES SUFFER FROM THE SAME PROBLEMS!!

So lets send approx 150 good paying jobs and the associated tax base out of the utica area because 44 cents is too much for a stamp??? These jobs could belong to YOU or a family member of yours someday. Lets get rid of the prisons and Wmart also and then we can just turn out the lights and save on the electric bill too.

Why do people think the price of stamps affects whether this place stays open or closes?

It's about the fact that why do you have a distribution center in Utica when there is another in Syracuse 50 miles away that more than likely can handle the work that Utica does for very little extra overhead.

If you ran a business, would you have as many places open when you could consolidate? Think before you speak.

You people are probably the same people that say well Wal-Mart cashiers should make $15/hr cause Wal-Mart makes alot of money but if they lose money well they should still make $15/hr.

Then you wonder why all U.S. jobs are being shipped to India daily.
