Lt. Grace Pruitt,(Utica's only female commander) the number one candidate on the civil service list was passed over twice by less senior male counterparts for promotion. Pruitt, a Utica Native, and commander of the CID Division, was never even interviewed for the Captain's position, where she has held the #1 slot since taking the civil service test. Dan LaBella says that it is an exciting time to be a Utica Police officer. Apparently true, But only if you a white male.

really have any of you people worked with or for her? you haven't so you don't know. she is horrible. you want to talk goose chases she is the best. also she began to screw up the lindsey case and was removed. the brought another supervisor in. so tell me she deservesit...

If she was screwing up on the job, there has to be a written account. Annual, semi-annual reviews are the usual manner with employers.

If she doesn't have bad write-ups, she'd have a decent chance at prevailing in a sexual discrimination suit. The law firm I work for handles employment discrimination cases frequently.

Grace Pruitt is the Commander in Charge of CID. She is in charge of every serious crime that occurs in the City and has done so for three years. The City put her in charge, let her command CID, but chose to pass her over because of? Civil Service lists serve a purpose. Promote those that deserve it. Let's see if the city has enough to back up their reasons for passing her by. Didn't a prisoner hang himself under Watson's Command, or LACK OF?

The normal process for promotion and hiring is to give a test, provide a list and determine the candidates. Grace turned out #1. The next step would be to look at seniority, accomplishments, and interview the candidates. That did not happen here. How do you explain taking a junior Lt, with NO criminal investigation experience, and promoting him to be in charge of CID, when you have the #1 candidate, already in charge of CID, with NO negative employee reviews, who is not even interviewed for the job? When you allow politics to make the selection for you, or when you decide, DESPITE superior qualifications, a woman should not have the job. It is discrimination, of the worst kind.

Watson is a outstanding supervisor and a hell of a street cop. You should not make any attempt to bash him in any way. You or Grace could never do the job he has done for the city in the present past of future.

You can talk all you want and it's going to get you no where regarding this case of being passed over for promotion. Ask Chuck J and others who were passed over a bunch of times. In the end the person to contact on this matter is not Labella but the mayor. He is the one who deciedes. Grace knows that like all the rest of do. The more waves you make about this matter the worst you are going to make it for her. Don't you think the mayor reads this stuff ??

Keep it up and you'll see it happen.

It would be nice if the mayor did read the posts. As a new mayor, he should be informed of how decisions are being made in his departments. He has the opportunity to question when things are not done properly. As the City's representative, his name goes first on gender discrimination lawsuits. Silence about the issues only allows the discrimination to continue. for centuries people have threatened to harm those that stood up for themselves. Grace has already been harmed, by being wrongfully passed over. A jury of reasonable people would find that she should have been promoted. The the city and the mayor have to pay lost wages, damages and the like. It is time to step up and be heard, not sit back and sulk in silence. Silence only supports continued gender discrimination.

The gender card can not work. A Female was promoted to Sgt in the last month and there has already been a Lt and Sgt's who have been female.
Again the mayor is the one who make the final decision on who gets promoted or not. Grace knows the system and she knows how it works. choice is made from the top 3 people. I beleive if she is passed over a 3rd time she has the right to have the reason clarified, but I'm sure someone out there can state the Civil Service Law for NY better then I.

Gender discrmination occurs when a qualified candidate is not selected and the selection cannot be justified. Grace is #1, senior to Watson, already the commander and has no adverse employment action to disqualify her. It is not just a matter of selection from the top 3, you have to justify the passing of a qualified candidate for a candidate with lesser qualifications. Watson's lack of experience, (in CID)lack of seniority, and lower score place him at a lower position overall than Grace. She has a valid claim under the law if she chooses to pursue that route. The article on the promotion indicated that interviews were conducted. That did not occur and that also makes it hard to justify the selection. If you are going to pass over a candidate, and base it on interviews, you would actually have to have conducted the interview for it to pass the legal threshold to be a valid selection process.

Are people implying there might be suspicious activity going on behind the scenes at city hall.

Her problem is she is too qualified. With our Public Safety Commissioner having a lack of qualifications, A Mayor surrounding himself with hangers on and has beens ( and a few "wish I was ez" thrown in) what can you expect?

All kidding aside, she is better off waiting and being promoted at a time when every promotiton and movement at the UPD and UFD arn'e under a cloud of comedy. She can hold her head high, and except for Mr. Williams, the promotions are suspect.

Going from Capt. the Dep. Chief in a week is sort of correspondence school police work. Cripe, next we will have an over the hill ex patrolman made Public Safety Commissioner.

Perhaps. The attitude of having worked your butt off for three years on midnights, taking call back, responding to criminal cases, personnel actions, and being a single mom. taking the test and scoring number #1 and then thinking, I've earned the promotion and will get it. Then not even getting a phone call about the job, and reading in the paper a junior Lt with no experience will be your new boss. Gotta say it, if you did not have an attitude after all that, there would be something wrong with you.

I would have respect for the opinon if I thought you were actually responding for the officer in question, however, barring that, she still has the respect the others will not have. I am sure, when your people are behind you things go better.

Once Roefaro is out, and Labella will follow ( by being fired)the rest will have nothing to do and she will be golden.

She is a Pylman mistake and a Julian cronnie all wrapped into one.

Pruitt was one of the major problems with the Lindsey investigation and was replaced in the mist of it. She has deep mental problems and within the last year other Officers and friends had distance themselves away from her. She has verbally attacked all bosses at the PD and severed all ties with them.

UPD is alot better without her in that position. Sex race color or creed played no role in this decision. It was the person.

First of all the city never put her in charge, Plyman did. Second she was involoved in the Louis Wright scandel where she and another CID investigator forged DNA documents in order to get a confession.

Yah, she qualified all right
