I used to dig the young musicians from there: Peter Macri, Markus Baker, John Hadsel, those drummers like, Fred Shaheen (?), La Rue (?), Walt (?), Frank Bonifasi, Durden (?) and those guys - used to watch them jam - they were all good ! White Tower, DanDee DoNuts, Shoppers City, Grand Union, Daws Drugs, Uptown Theatre and a real pain in the butt "Officer Dibbles" type UPD guy - Zumpano ? He tried to be such a hard*ss cop, but he was so easy to get over on and I think he really cared about the "rich" kids in South Utica.("Rich Kids" ? Hellloooo - Gilmore Village ?!?!)

Yes, I grew up in South Utica, I remember Rohmyers Grocery store and Pashyan's on Roosevelt Dr. Andys Superette and Shultzes(sp) Stores on Melrose Ave above Sunset Ave. And, there was another little store on Sunset and Seward ave, I think it was called McGuinnis'.(sp) Sunset, Our Lady of Lourdes, and JF Hughes Schools. I can remember the Sunset Bowling Alley, Pin O Rama, and not in Utica but the Arura Bowling Alley and Roller Skating Rink. Ahhh the memories!!! Wankel Playground Little League Baseball there and Murnane Field for UFA Football. White Tower was a big hangout, how about King Cole Ice Cream (Those Super Thick Shakes) and Jeans Beans and Uptown Grill for Fish Fry. The good ole days.

Dick's Superette, Wankel Playground, Jeans Beans on Friday, King Cole on any hot summer day ... kids all lined up on the railing ... riding your bike as fast as you could down those hills on Proctor Blvd, Arlington Road ... crushing pennies under the train ... Utica was a lot busier then. Great memories,

Charlie the cop who was on the corner of Genesee & Amy Ave. Miss Patsy's School of Dance. Grand Union. The tunnel between Roosevelt & Gilmore Village. Tasty Creme. Dan Dee Donuts. Shopper City. National Auto - my first 2 wheeler, rode it all the way home. Foedish (Old lady undergarments). Uptown grill. Hughes School, Jones School. Corner stores (on nearly every corner - & the all sold tomato pie and penny candy). The balcony at the Uptown theater. On Friday, the line from Jeans Beans went around the corner to the Uptown theater, but worth the wait.
The wonderful garden on the corner of Sunset & Roosevelt, everblooming.

I remember walking to Grand Union with mom, from Emerson Ave., to get the groceries in the 1970's. We'd stop at White Tower for coffee for mom, and chocolate milk for me, and an english muffin. Sometimes we'd go to Shopper's City to look around, or maybe Emdins or Bob Sonne's- I got my ears pierced there when I was 19. The good old days! Mom just passed away and I miss her more than words can say.<3

White Tower and LUMS with my dad in the late 70s early 80s.I wouldn't trade growing up in South Utica for any other place:)

This is an exact description of my childhood! Ridgewood junk food and Schultz's on melrose too!! Playing in the old destroyed UCA, and the tadpoles in the old swimming pool in the field on Edgewood and Farview. The rusty monkeybars and the falling down baseball back stop both in the same field!?

playing fast pitch at the Ds on Oneida St.(circa 1982)Somebody hit a home run in to Oneida st and a guy driving a car either grabbed it out of mid air or grabbed it on the bounce(it was a tennis ball) Either way it was a helluva catch and then he was nice enough to flip it back:)

WOW, I lived on 5 Emerson Drive from 1965 to 1973 and remember the exact same things. Remember Glazier Isle and Dandee Donuts next to the Uptown theater. From our block I was friends with Casy McGee, Pat Hughes and Frank Tucciarone.

.....grossmans on french, the old Chanatrys bldg, wankle all day all night.....remember when it was actually a filled pool? Bike tracks on higby and behind woodlawn firehouse. Of course razi's. Diving board at double falls on Sauqoit Creek, dempseys on seward and roosevelt. Listening to the NH band in the distance, color-commentating from ND, loud speaker from Wankle games and occasional Blue Sox announcements depending on wind direction.........memories.... ....

The best part of growing up in Sin City during the 70's and 80's was not having play dates, the internet and cell phones. It was a time when things were real and.events happened organically. For example, The rumble between Loudres and Hughes in 82 wasn't followed on Twitter or Facebook! You called your friends on rotary dial and or as my grandmother shouted in her Utica slang, " RE2-0778 and met at UCA with your foreign object. I was the PA at the South Utica Baberuth fiekd in 83. " Please return the foul ball for a free freeze pop ". The best establishment in South Utica was the Uptown Grill..You couldn't order pie without having a meal! The wooden booths, the art deco light fixtures and the bar were as if were placed in a 1940's Mob movie. How about Lilly Lang Tree's and quarter Matt's draft at the Monday night Blue Sox game! Utica was cast of characters with the best sense of humor in the country!! We had 3 public high schools and 1 Catholic..I smoked my first joint in the parking lot of Skate A Rama! The original Utica Comets and the Utica Olympics basketball team!
great memories
