I completely agree that any talk of a benefit or fund raiser already is just plain tasteless. And in most cases they are held to help pay medical expenses from a long expensive illness or recovery, which ever the case. But in a situation like this one, I'd imagine it's not for bills or living expenses. I mean one victim was a CO. One could survive well on that pension. So maybe in this situation it's more of a memorial kind of event and what you're giving money to is to help cover the cost of the event. I know if I was suddenly left widowed like this I'd want people to celebrate and remember my husband and his life, but I wouldn't want to have to worry about funding it either. And if the amount of funds surpasses the cost of benefit, it should be donated. Maybe to the Trooper's K-9 Unit or something in relation this tragedy. I wouldn't even be surprised if that's what this benefit is for, to maybe raise funds and awareness of law enforcement and the necessity of the K-9 unit. Maybe the family wants to do something positive in their loved ones name and wants to keep focused on something to help make it through such a trying time. It's unexpected and devastating I bet to lose someone like this. A friend of mine lost her husband to a drunk driver a year ago. She helped raise money for drunk driving awareness. It was therapeutic for her and helped a good cause. I'd imagine it's for like reasons here too.
the problem is they dont give a specific destination for the money.and didnt a couple of them work for dept of corrections? if so they make at least double what i make.they have no problem buying boats, snow mobiles, notorcycles and four wheelers.maybe they should put some money away for funeral expenses.

They are only for MEDICAL expenses!!!!

Funeral expenses run from $7,000 and up. Do YOU have that kind of money for a sudden death in YOUR family?

You need to become better educated and learn what the meaning of compassion is.

"You need" to stop putting people down to make your trashy bitter self feel better Joan. If you were educated you wouldn't balk at people that had real degrees and didn't have to marry a public servant.

Have you ever thought maybe they do not have the funds to bury their loved ones? How the h-LL would you feel? You are completely heartless.
No, they are not heartless. Most of the people that were killed were middle-aged or beyond. They had at least half of a lifetime to prepare for their inevitable burial. Your argument just doesn't wash. We are not our brother's keeper and it is high time people prepare ahead of time for their own death. Every family has tragedy and need. ONly opportunistic parasites use tragedy for personal gain.

People need to take personal responsibility and buy adequate life insurance if others are financially dependent upon them.

Don't understand why anyone would reply to posts like this on topix. 99% of the posts on here are perverted, racist, or insulting. I read them to get a laugh. Don't let an ignorant person ruin your day. After all, there are many, many more of them out there than the normal people. :)

This benefit is also for the other people including a baby that lived in the apartment building the sick thing burned out without regard to the other people. They lost everything. Is it their fault? Should they have planned ahead for someone burning all of their things including everything for their baby? Have some compassion if you can give do it! If you can't then shut up! No one is soliciting your hard earned money. It is a benefit that will also help our communities heal from this and hopefully bring neighbors together. Not all about money.

People need to get over it. Biggest change in this country the last thirty years is everytime their is a tragedy the counselors are there for anyone who needs them and the benefits all over the place. It's ironic but people aren't happy anymore unless there is something to feel bad about. everybody wants everybody to feel sorry for them. I actually heard a lady in walmart tell someone she used to see the one of the victims at the bank every few months then she started sobbing right there in line. So she barely new the guy and she carried on like this. Get over it people. It was a terrible thing that happen. My prayers to the victims and their families who must be suffering. But the rest of you STOP IT. It happenned , it's over and life continues.
