SUNYIT Project Makes Progress Hires

After waiting years to break ground, the $125 million nanotechnology
project at SUNYIT is moving forward briskly.
* Two months after construction crews moved onto the site, work on the
Computer Chip Commercialization Center, known as Quad C, is ahead of
* Many of the workers are from local and regional companies.
* And students from local schools are being hired or serving as interns
for the company that’s overseeing the endeavor.
“This is an incredibly important project for SUNYIT,” said acting
college President Robert Geer.
Once it’s up and running, Quad C is expected to employ more than 900
and might help make the region a hub for computer chip research,
development and manufacturing.
Completion of the project is set for late 2014.
Geer said the local jobs already being generated on site are the
beginning of the good the project is hoped to bring to the area.
“This is going to give New Yorkers opportunities they couldn’t get
anywhere else in the world,” he said.
That’s already happening.
M&W Group, which is overseeing the project, has hired several recent
graduates from local schools, including SUNYIT. The company is one of a
small handful in the world that makes clean rooms, the extremely
sterilized places where much nanotechnology research and development
must be performed.
In all, there are about 50 people working at the site, and about
two-thirds of them are from the region, said Bruno Ozols, M&W’s
construction director on site.
The Quad C project is being created under a partnership between SUNYIT
and Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. Private
sector partners also are involved.
In a statement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the Albany school’s initiatives
are serving as economic drivers across the state.
“Quad C will help make the Mohawk Valley a key location in this global
industry,” he said.“Giving SUNYIT students the opportunity to be a
part of this project from the very beginning will provide them with a
unique academic experience and help build the highly skilled workforce
that makes New York such an attractive location for the world’s leading
In Wednesday’s sunny, almost fall-like weather, the project site was
busy. A pair of cranes arched across it and workers in hard hats
maneuvered heavy equipment into position.
Several of M&W’s interns and new hires said they were happy to be
working for the company.

Yes let's all stare at the only building going on: NY sponsored dog & pony show. No private sector interest. Just the usual smoke & mirrors and jobs for slobs. Sorry, the industry won't be looking at NY. In 20 years that will be converted to a swimming pool or other "sports" related bullsht.
#3 Sep 5, 2013
You really are gullible or benefiting from all the shiny coins they're throwing.
Who's the construction company? No doubt one of the "chosen" Destitos or Gaetanos' friends. You don't even have to look it up.
#4 Sep 5, 2013
Funny they don't name the "private" companies lol!
Must be more of Brindisi's "secret magic beans" LMAO!
#5 Sep 6, 2013
Funny first people complain that Nano will not happen and now they complain about state money. Do you think Malta was 100 percent private money? Guess you will never make people happy.
#6 Sep 6, 2013
Should we tell the state we do not want the 900 jobs paying 90,000 a year? That helps keep our kids in NYS and has a positive ripple effect through out the whole local economy. Also, it will attract other private investment. I am not sure if you own a business or work for a local company. But,this will help everyone.
#7 Sep 6, 2013
Maybe we should ask for more jails that has brought us scum and their families up here from around the state. How did that work out for us? Some people just don't get it. You can't argue with stupid.
#8 Sep 6, 2013
Dear God, do people have to bitch about everything? Some of the people on this board seriously need to get a life.
If you hate this area so much why do you continue to post about it on Topix? Why not move somewhere else?
This project is a great opportunity for this area, and we are uniquely suited to have more industry move in around nanotechnology.
Perhaps all you people who just like to bitch should read up on the fact that we have one of the best fresh water supplies in all of the country here and that nanotech needs tons of fresh water to cool their equipment. This could be the start of a great turnaround for this area and all people can do is bitch about it.
I am sure you have never benefited from public money either, you don't drive on the roads or assume that the plows will keep the snow off them. I am sure as hell certain that none of you send your kids to public school, I am sure you would rather keep them locked in the basement with you.

The funny thing is the person up above pro ably gets a NYS pension. It's someone who has worked for the state.
#10 Sep 6, 2013
The sad part is, SUNYIT closed their swimming pool all summer and it might still be closed because they didn't have the money to keep it running. No money to support ongoing operations but millions for new stuff. Not that I think the new stuff is bad but it is funny and sad when they do things like close the pool due to lack of funds.

Nobody is coming there that's bullshit window dressing to make the stupid people of Utica think they "succeeded". The OD is the ultimate in gullible too. They were shown 2 guys with computers and a small construction site and were too "amazed" to even ask any real questions. The fact of the matter is there are no private company names attached to this and the OD is portraying it as if it is a "home un". People are so gullible and stupid. NY is the MOST expensive state to do business in and live in and the semiconductor companies passed around the abysmal report that showed just how bad it was.
You people should unplug your heads fro your asses. In a year there will be no "chip plant" there. SUNY IT simply doesn't have anything NEAR the curriculum of lure. End of story. Stick to dull sports team you have been cut out of the industry and just don't know it.
#12 Sep 6, 2013
You have a next to nothing grasp of what they look at in siting. Water is abundant in many places where there is no corruption and in places where there is a better workforce and schools. What part of the most expensive state in the country do you not understand? You think "water" is going to mitigate that? You must have lived in Utica all your life.
I'll be checking in to keep reminding you all of how stupid and gullible you are. You just bought the latest bullshit lie designed to keep the patronage jobs going. Steve Dimeo and his merry gang of leeches need their patronage do nothing jobs they don't even posses the actual understanding or know WHAT they're doing. If you didn't realize THAT in 16 years you deserve to keep getting raped in the butt by these losers and criminals.
PS it's not a nuclear power plant idiot the water isn't for "cooling" are you truly this stupid?

Talked with a project participant yesterday and they said Cuomo is panicking and trying to make the state millions sound like there is a big big company hiding in that little building. He will keep hinting past his re election. Nothing is coming.. just state tax dollars and "hints" as they have the last 15 years.
NY reports 321,814 actual taxpayers. The "nano facility" cost you $125 million just for this latest Kabuki theater of nothing.
That's $388.42 per taxpayer and they won't tell ANYONE what it's truly coast sine they started it years ago.
Nobody can TELL the uncounted MILLIONS EDGE and SUNY IT's lackluster abilities cost you... they have been enriching themselves and not delivering ANYTHING but the same promises and grants and help for Friends & Family and the EDGE's books are CLOSED. Further, look at the companies "donating" to EDGE... They write off the money and the Friends & Family take a cut and hand it back out the back door.
If you pay taxes, Andrew Cuomo cost you MINIMUM $388.42 to send the work to their buddies for a new stable for the Mohawk Valley's new White Elephant stable this year.

Nano has come to NYS. Please do your research. Can you say Malta NY. The schools are bad? Cornell,Colgate,RIT,RPI,Hamilt on,SU,Albany U,SUNY IT,Utica College. Yeah,NY has some real shity schools. Are you for real?
It is coming. So what will complain about next? To much traffic.
#15 Sep 6, 2013
"Nano" hasn't come to utica if so there would be a foundry there. Nobody was "named" no private jobs were created at Marcy yet the news acts 100% the opposite without stating a single rel fact or being smart enough to realize it's the usual smoke and mirrors. Say whatever you want pretend "it's coming" all you want the only thing there is Malta and that's a research hub with limited use and totally dependent on NYS corporate welfare.
Corporate welfare is what came to NY not any lasting presence in the "nano" industry. Even the usual cuomo contractors are making the swimming pool lol! They're right you idiots really ARE gullible. I another year I'll point this out to you and maybe you'll start realizing that for 20 years you morons are getting duped for dreams and votes by the dishonest scum leaders and charlatans at EDGE. It's a tax shelter that puts on a weak showing if you'd ever seen a real facility or foundry.
#16 Sep 7, 2013
You are an idiot if you think they hired "900" people. Keep reading the OD and voting for Cuomo! Also it's not going to help moron they aren't paying any taxes. Duuuuuuuuh. You're hundreds of millions in the negative column idiot. Wow. Just WOW! These people really are as stupid as the day is long and don't understand what is going on. Is your name Steve Dimeo? You CAN'T be that stupid to think now there's some big "chip plant" there idiot. The thing in the OD is a peanut. A foundry is the size of football fields. No wonder you idiots get raped by Albany and live in feces. You're all rock stupid and easily impressed!
#17 Sep 7, 2013
These are happening all over the US they are called "Nano to nowheres" you people are clueless. They build crap so the teachers can get paid and they promise the state taxpayers a "big surprise" hush hush deal is in the works. Wa has one, Alabama has 2, Ohio is in on the show. It's a money shell game and a tax shelter.
So far, M&W hired a few temporary INTERNS as they always do and dump. They're not for Utica. This is a project to build a small pretend clean room so they can pretend to teach the students, and if you read the article you'd note the article said they were all learning. That means grunts not "valuable SUNY IT rockstars. M&W is just designing it with their modular system ho hum.
The REAL gem all you morons missed was the name of the crony "Charles Gaetano Construction Corp." that's doing the heavy work.
Pure Utica Friends & Family plan in Utica compliments of Corrupt Andrew M. Cuomo the phony Governor. These people are eating you alive and you retards are gaga over a "classroom" anNed the usual Charles Gaetano Construction Corp. state patronage job with Roanne Destitos name on the check.
Nothing new. In ten years it'll be a minor memory but for now it sure looks good for the dumb cny old lady democrat voters fed BS by Donovan and Cuomo. Follow the money. Next Cuomo will kust outight pay to build EVERYTHING that's how these road to nowhere ripoff are. You haven't been paying attention to the Cuomo Dynasty and the local scammers for the last 25 years have you goof?
You people are so fucked you just don't even know. There are only 3-4 chip makers with the money they cost and none of them want anything to do with Cuomo or the SNY. Check back in a year there will be "lots" of jobs sponsored by ReElect Andrew Cuomo. He's also sending you $350 per household "fake tax break" BS just before you morons are to go to the polls to put your misery on for another 4 years. President Cuomo will leave you all high and dry unless you're blind and can't see it everywhere around you you're one of the Friends with do nothing jobs they're already fighting over no doubt. "Russel Brooks Plant Safety Man".
NY highest taxes costs and regs in the US.= Bye. Go take lots of pretty pictures of your planetarium kids and check back or Texas Instruments in a year lol! Goofs!

In case you haven't noticed, that's exactly what they've been doing. The only thing even remotely propping up the area's tax base is a massive influx of refugees and their resulting public payments.
Mind you, I support refugee resettlement, but it's a fool's game. You know why? Because the refugees that truly thrive, and their children, LEAVE THE AREA. Hence the steady decline in the region's average educational levels and income.
If by "uniquely suited" you mean "have an embarrassing abundance of empty storefronts and commercial properties" then, yes, you are correct. The entire region is in move-in condition by those standards.
The water demands of the semiconductor manufacturing industry are due to cleaning requirements, not cooling.
As to fresh water supplies, perhaps you didn't notice the problems with low water levels at Hinckley Reservoir over the last decade.

nice that you use other names to argue your point. However your point is not factual. NYS has Nano and so will Utica.
Luther Forest Technology campus welcomes Globalfoundries as they break ground on world’s most advanced chip fabrication plant, marking the beginning of a new era in US economic d
Luther Forest Technology Campus Economic Development Corporation (LFTC) today welcomed GLOBALFOUNDRIES as they held their official groundbreaking in Malta, NY for the construction of an approximately $4.2 billion microchip fabrication plant, called Fab 2. This marks the beginning for the construction of the most advanced chip fabrication plant in the world. By locating in Saratoga County, New York, this project demonstrates a new era of innovation and prosperity for upstate New York, the US and the global technology marketplace.
In addition to almost a decade of planning, by economic development entities and state and local government leaders, public-private partnerships have contributed to the success of LFTC.
"As one of the largest economic development projects in the country, it is monumental in moving the region toward a brighter economic future. create more than 1,400 high-tech jobs with an estimated annual payroll of $88 million once production begins, as well as around 5,000 indirect jobs annual payroll for all jobs is $290 million. The build out of the campus is expected to lead to future growth for Tech Valley, as additional companies move in remaining development areas.
Bottom line seems like you hate democrats. I can't change your thoughts about that. I don't like either party but I like Nano and I know it's coming to Marcy.
#20 Sep 7, 2013
NY has NO nano. There are NO foundries in NY, you would know they are 3x the size of the little labs NY is making in their nano to nowhere ruse. Maybe you are fooled and impressed but again there are only 3-4 major players and none of them are placing foundries in NY.
Keep dreaming and playing on people's stupidity.
