Does anyone else think the South end of the Arterial is a disaster? Short ramps at rt 8, random traffic light at railroad tracks...not to mention the lights between Court and Oswego.

Way back when, there was a time when Interstate 81 was supposed to go through Utica. Somehow, that got shot down and I-81 wound up in Syracuse, and Utica wound up with the travesty that was and still is NYS 5-8-12 !!!

Legend has it that "5-8-12" was supposed to be built to be elevated (like I-81 in Syracuse), but the folks at the Holy Trinity Church complained that the old timers could not safely make it to mass, and so the Arterial eventually became a glorified parkway, complete with all the stoplights.

The arterial isn't the only thing about this town trapped in 1965...been 'downtown' lately?

And they just paved the ramps...hit the bumps on the burrstone exit..you have to raze the manholes dip shits...that will knock your wheels all to hell, hou can't leave the manholes lower than the road surface...and how about the water laying on it...just put millions into it last year and they could never figure out water does not run up hill..what a mess..

Even more mental is the numbering. Ever tried giving someone directions? Take 790, 5, 8, 12 to... It's like a kid just learning numbers put this on the map. If Utica got I-81 in the 60's would it be 81, 790, 5, 8, 12? The smartest thing would be to put some of these "designations" on other roads to get them on the map and maybe bring in people...

This is true but utica had very little chance of 81. Syracuse made much more sense.
