"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country".- JFK

Until the citizens get that nothing will happen except decay. The role of public service is to assist the citizens of the city ( or towns or villages or county or state or...) somehow it got turned around. Who wants to step up?

That's a great idea, stop all government handouts. But until that happens we SHOULD be fighting for our share. We pay taxes too.
You're part of the problem I think. This is why you and CNY ended up like you did!

Iím curious how you would handle revitalization in Utica. If you were in charge, what moves would you make to improve our economic future? We donít need people to complain about every project attempted in this area. We need people who have constructive ideas. Iím not trying to put you down or insult you, Iím truly looking for positive change. I know you will say dump all our politicians, but that isnít going to happen overnight. Give me something we can build on. Ways to draw businesses to central NY. Other areas are fighting for every dollar the state and federal government is making available. Here we complain about it. Why? Government grants are going to be spent somewhere. Why not here? We should be fighting for more money, not complaining about what we do get.
Since the real systemic problems that hold Utica and the rest of New York back are at the state level then cities like Utica and counties throughout upstate New York have to band together in order to advocate for change. Utica (and the rest of Upstate) New York will never be really successful unless and until taxes are lower, over reaching regulations are turned back and unions are reigned in.

What would be my plan to fix Utica? First I would stop trying to sell these bones that our state legislators are throwing us as the saviors of this region. They are not. If they were we would be one of the most economically successful areas in the country. I would turn down these supposed one fixes and every time I did I would contact every media outlet I could find and give a speech about how true economic development comes about when there is less government, less regulation and less union control(especially public sector union control).

There is no big supermarket in west Utica because those businesses have determined that a west Utica location wouldn't be profitable. If one could be profitable then one would be there. That same principle applies to the entire state. If businesses can make a profit here then they will come. These one time infusions of recycled taxpayer money do little or nothing in the long term and serve only to produce press releases for politicians who want everyone to think they are doing the right thing for their constituents. They are not. If they were then things would already be better.

Ask yourself this. If all of the money being poured into nanotechnology in this area is taxpayer money(which is currently the case. there is no private investment) then what good does that actually do?
