Interesting comments from the DUDA president. "Almost there", not hardly! When the publications that tout the attractions of Utica's downtown are produced by independent publishers who are funded with advertising revenue from the successfull businesses in the area, then perhaps can you say we are "Almost there". Otherwise this is simply another self-serving quasi - election advertisement for a figment of the administrations imagination.

I return to Utica annually to visit elderly relatives and the deterioration from year to year is astounding. Until the focus is on fixing the fundamental problems, Utica will never enjoy the renaisance that Mayor Goofaro craves.

I leave you with this: "With all the needs of Utica, they did not have one shovel-ready improvement project that could have benefitted from Federal Stimulus funds. A sad commentary about Utica and the politicians."

the brochure is a great idea, but putting the cart before the horse. Need to develop the downtown area before you can promote it. At least that seems the most logical.

For downtown specifically

- fix the lighting on bleecker street on the block of the Sons of Italy to deter crime and enhance its architecture

- break ground for the parking/bus facility in downtown

-use the $25,000 in grant money sitting for the last two years on lower genesee st.

-We will be awarded a 2.3 million grant to create apartments in downtown utica

-re sychronize all the lights in Utica

They are not the most glamorous projects but all make sense and it shows that the city is moving ahead
hehe

Perhaps if someone else stepped up to the plate and took the lead with Downtown Utica- the Radisson would not have tot take the lead,Dont be a hater for someone willing to work hard for the good of the whole community

Ok so yes these things show that the city is moving ahead, but more than anything what this city needs are jobs for educated people right out of college, and utica is doing almost nothing to make that happen. Once you bring businesses to the area that will attract 20 something's with an education dowtown utica will grow on its own, but if we continue to add stores like kholes, walmart, burrlington coat factory all we are doing is showing these people right out of college that utica has nothing to offer them. Bring in jobs for people with some sort of an education and you will see downtown utica boom with the trickle effect, until then glossy brochures will do nothing more than cost us money.

Let's see:

1. When did the block of Bleecker Street become part of Downtown? What significant architectural buildings in that block do you hope to enhance?
Where do you propose the city get the funds for installation of this improved lighting as well as the ongoing operating cost, you don't think those streetlights come on for free do you? I doubt any of those bleecker st merchants are going to pony up any money for new street lights! Criminals in utica shoot and kill human beings, you think a new streetlight is going to deter that kind of crime.

Moving On.....

2. Where may I ask do you think the funds are supposed to come from for the proposed parking / bus facility? Last I knew the Utica Transit Authority was bankrupt and had to be taken over by Syracuse based Centro. I think the taxpayer's are just about tapped out.

And then there's 3.$25,000 for lower Genesee St.
Let's see a new facade for Lynn Mishalnie's offices, and some improvements to Peeper's. Maybe a potted plant or an ashcan for the degenerate's that hang out on the street in front of their apt bldg.

Let's not forget 4. Downtown Apartments.
Please tell me and others reading, just who in their right mind is going to live in these apartments. Subsidized housing for welfare clients or the elderly?

Finally # 5 I'll give you this one as it is very necessary to improve the flow of outbound traffic leaving Utica.

You obviously do not own property or do not pay much in the way of local real estate taxes. Not one proposal that you suggested will create any permenant tax paying jobs or businesses that will improve the Utica area. Lipstick on a pig is still just lipstick!!!
