The life cycle of these places is about 4-6 years. From a business perspective in makes sense to the owner, especially in light of current economic conditions. As a consumer, it's like anything else, you get what you pay for. I go to the gym to mentally unwind and stay fit. I don't need some beotch or geek behind the counter chastising me because I moved a bench 5 feet, exhaled too loud or ripped one. What happened to his little girlfriend Cristy?

I wanted to bring my 8 yo son in to work out with me and they wouldn't let me. I know kids can be a pain but my son loves to work out. Nothing crazy like benching a ton of weight or anything, but doing push up, sit up and some minor strength training. Then go hit the cardio equip, well they wouldn't let me bring him in so I cancelled my membership and went to the fitness mill and got a great family plan. Al even had a training plan for the younger kids to work with.

As a former member & female - I am quite annoyed with your statement. It doesn't matter how much a person weighs, what they lift, gender or their age...at a real gym everyone works to their max potential & the gym atmosphere helps members to become more fit, stronger, faster, better... Planet Fitness doesn't do that & the folks their don't want it! The fact is: If you are comfortable with mediocrity for yourself, the place is fine. If you want a gym that pushes you to constantly be better, it is not. Randy Couture wrote: Planet Fitness is for posers and woman. No real men work out there.

Common sense says that you can not sell $10 memberships and stay open for long. The only way to survive is to have 6000 member. That means the place would have to be crowded all the time and the equipment would take a beating. I give most Planet Fitness locations 5 years before they self destruct.

tumble weed wrote: I've been inside Planet Fitness clubs in the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas and they are much nicer. Less crowded, cleaner (and better) equipment and locker rooms and monthly memberships run in the $100-$150 range. I'm confused as to why the Planet Fitness Clubs in New Hartford are practically giving away memberships, but you are right that it has attracted the wrong element. But, then again, doesn't every gym in this area attract the "wrong" element? When I was a student at Utica College the swimming pool and exercise rooms which were supposed to be for students and members only were teeming with homosexual perverts who liked to ogle at people as they worked out. The students who manned the sign-in stations never bothered to ask for anybody's ID or membership card and hence they were indirectly contributing to the problem. I've decided to remain fat and out of shape until I move to a bigger city. First of all there is no Planet Fitness that costs $100-150 as you put it, I checked you made that shit up second of all come to the one in Rome, mostly 30+ very clean and what they call a no judgement zone is truly just that. Just another excuse in a long line of lazy people excuses.

I get a kick of all the little puny guys that go there in groups of 3 or 4, who think they're hot shit. Judgment-free zone my ass...I can't help but crack up laughing when I see them come in. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of weight training? Taking turns with 3 or 4 of your "buddies" ...rest period between sets is only supposed to be about 30-90 secs. not 5 minutes as you take turns..oh and have "coffee talk" in between sets.. Bottom line...is I'd rather see a lot of overweight people going to the gym as well as whatever you people define as "low life" there working there ass off to get healthy as opposed to a bunch of punks taking turns.
