A Democratic committeeman made a series of allegations Monday against city police, Common Council President Frank Meola and former council candidate Ashley Torres.
Alexis Torres, Ashley Torres’ husband, alleged in a news conference that city police failed to investigate his claims of domestic abuse by his wife, theft from his bank account and threats to his life from his wife.
Torres also alleged that Meola had a personal relationship with Ashley Torres as he recruited her to run in the Democratic primary for the First Ward against Councilman Frank Vescera, D-1. He said that Meola, the chairman of the city’s Democratic Party, helped pay for Ashley Torres’ campaign and that both of them failed to report it to the state Board of Elections.
Ashley Torres declined to comment on the allegations but did say they are in the middle of a divorce.
“If there was any validity to it, I would’ve been prosecuted,” she said.
Meola could not be reached for comment.
Torres refused to take any questions and did not provide any evidence to back up his claims.
Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Hauck said the department did investigate the theft allegations, but since it was a joint bank account, there was no crime committed.
Hauck also said Alexis Torres reported his wife struck him several times in September, but he declined to press charges.
