Stephanie;
What great comments. You are right about downtown compared to when I was a youth. Before the malls I remember circling the streets at holiday time to find a parking place outside the boston store. There were also numerous other businesses located on streets that are long gone. Now the only plans anybody can come up with is to build parking garages or block streets for parking. Parking lots are expensive to build and maintain. One could expect to rebuild the floor structure once every 10 years. Hard to believe that with few businesses the need is justified. Hanna made downtown clean and safe. He had foot patrols and multiple times daily he would have the DPW clean the streets and sidewalks. Downtown can be resurrected. It wil take imagination and persistence and eyes tha can see what need to be done..

Downtown is a sad, sad place. During my time in Utica I have lived through many of Myaors. The only Mayor I ever seen put a dent in downtown Utica was Mayor Hanna. Hanna saved the Adirondack Building, the Old Utica Beauty School, the old Woolworths Building, Hoetl Utica and many more. Hanna also was involved with giving the business owners new signs, canopies, paint. Hanna also provided low interest loans to small businesses to start. The newly designed bus shelters were awesome. Back then downtown was vibrant with lights and flags ever where. If Hanna could do it any Mayor can. Downtown is not to far gone. We just need a Mayor who cares about dowtown and its history

People! Downtown is DEAD! Has been for a very long time. It should be left to RIP.
EVERY election brings up "downtown". It doesn't exist anymore. NOTHING will revive that dead horse.
Just like these "lofts" that will be built on Broad St. Who the hell can even AFFORD to buy one here? This is an economically-depressed area!
There are no $20/hr jobs here. Here.......ur talking retail/restaurant jobs. Dead end. You can't even afford to raise a family on $7/hr much less buy a frigging LOFT!
Get real!
Probably the few that will be buying will be the CEO's who have a mistress(es) on the side & who need "love nests".

Well, you do have some good points to your commett. I don't feel downtown is lost. Like I stated before downtown did fall to the waste side when the Riverside Mall opened and when Mayors don't do their jobs.

See its the job of our Mayor to offer incentives to businesses to stay or come to downtown. Its the job of the Mayor to fix up downtown so that would be investors will want to invest in downtown. The City of Utica has a department called the Urban Economic Developement Agency that is suppose to take care of all this. See when a job is not being done, who is altimately to blame, the Mayor.

We are depressed but there is hope, but anything will do. Mayor Hanna, for ever its worth did alot for downtown. If he tried 100 ideas and only 1-was good, still that was one good more the Julian tried or had.

Look at the brightside. If you switch Mayors you better the chance getting what downtown needs. Hanna the nut he is implamented some me good ideas and saved historical buildings.

The problem with Downtown utica is that too many undesirable people have filtered to the outskirts of Downtown and now make it their home. Then they wander around downtown all day and make doing business here impossible. I have been down here for 15 years so I should know!!! You need to have a law enforcement presence Downtown to begin with to make people feel safe and then build up from there... Maybe even have a central downtown station for some of the police force.. It appears that everyone is leaving downtown and very few stay or open shop here!!!

Exactly!

I have seen residents of the Genesee Towers sit on the Busy Corner late at night just watching the cars go by. Exciting!

Who the heck would wanna buy a loft on Broad St. and come outside to.........what? Nothing. Excuse me.......we do have Utica Monday Night! LOL.

It all comes down to the economy here. You can never rebuild a downtown to the tune of having all the suburbanites drive down to shop, stroll, eat, enjoy. It's NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! There is no draw there.

Sure, it would be nice to say that we'll have blocks of small specialty shops, eateries, outside tables, etc. And, ppl can walk & enjoy for blocks. Bus service to drop you off in case u get tired of walking or need assistance. But, it's all wishful thinking. Utica cannot bring those types of businesses here.

Case in point: Sangertown Square: They call it a "mall". In reality.....it's a disgrace! We had a really nice mall.......years ago........Riverside Mall......first one in this area. Look what happened to that! Because SANGERTOWN was gonna be made to be "the mall". What stores stay there? Got enough jewelry stores in there that's for sure. Most of the ppl that buy in those jewelry stores couldn't afford turkey if it were 10 cents a pound! You have no draw there.

I moved here in 1984 and the same issues existed then. No parking, vacant buildings and the homeless roaming Genesee Street. I'm surprised they call Utica a city. More like a village.

The reality is people do not shop downtown anywhere any longer. It would make more sense to tear down useless, outdated buildings and use the space left behind for other things. Create recreational spaces. Create a space to draw in all the small home based businesses to have stands-cheesemakers, maple syrup producers, local fresh meat market stands, organic local produce, small bakers, etc. Open a space to inexpensively hold business and technology seminars. Create a NYS train museum at Union Station. Have someone open a toy train layout/museum down there. Work with the state to do away with fishing license requirements and open up an area at the harbor to fish, sit, take a boat ride, have a small city aquarium. Open a miniature golf course with a city theme downtown. How about a drive in theater in the North Genesee St area? A nice dog walking park with paid admission near the canal? I am sure you will shoot all of this down. That is where the problem lies. No one is open to change or DOING anything, and the ones that do get knocked down.

Yes I am sure the mercury in the fish will make the "marina" SUCH an attraction. Toy train tourist trap yeah that will help you.

My god these uticans just cannot be helped they're goat-stupid. "Malls" went out in the 90s now we buy online but Utica is still "working on" getting mall shoppers to drive into ticket town and put up with thieves and scumbag phonies bothering you for money in their courts and taxes. Not to mention the criminals and street scum!

Nobody in their right mind would move TO Utica to put up with a government that simply views them as food and doesn't even care if they are not represented.

Utica and Uticans need to go fcuk themselves they deserve to have it just as it is they WORKED to make it like that.
Enjoy.

As predicted. Buh bye. It is obvious the only joy you get in your sad, pathetic little life is to spew your negativity on here and argue with people. I am jumping off your crazy train. Let's hope more passengers follow. Then you'll have to stand in your crappy little bathroom and argue with yourself in the mirror.

I like the dog walk with PAID admission idea. Lol! You don't have to pay admission to walk your dog in Central Park but they believe people will come to pay to walk their dog around a feces infested canal! Lol!

Only in Utica would these goat-stupid people be told "You have mercury and sewage in your canal"...

and only in Utica would they say "SEE?!?!?! THERE YOU GO BEING "NEGATIVE" again!!

I call BS on all these people so afraid like little children of bad news "negative"!

They actually spew the word like an epitaph! They DON'T CARE about the sewage they just resent not being able to lie and deny it! THAT's that Utican phoniness in action pure and simple. When you see someone acting all resentful of "negative" you are probably talking with someone who SURVIVES off some element of the "negativity" and just hate that people are finding out about it. NOBODY from a normal city thrives off "not talking about it" when they have a problem.

That's a lowlife Utica for ya! Lie, deny and run from the truth like CHILDREN!
