One of my memories as a teenager was when Bobby Kennedy came to Utica in 1967 I believe, or maybe it was 1968. He was campaigning for President at the time (for the primaries probably). The rally was held in the small square across from the Observer Dispatch building. Franklin Square. There was a small stage set up and he talked about the usual politics stuff (greek to me) but he made a joke about the now defunct Utica Daily Press and that if they didn't like him so much, could they at least spell his name right. He got a quite a kick out of giving them that jab. The crowd was absolutely wowed by the Kennedy charm, wit and presence which was also poingnant because of the tragedy of JFK only 4 years earlier.
At the end, he started shaking people's hands while still standing on the stage (or was it atop a car? i forget), we all crowded in and i got to shake his hand. Let me tell you, that was the most remarkable handshake of my entire life. He
was bent over to reach us and his assistant was holding the back of his suit or his belt so he didn't lose his balance because there was quite a commotion.

When he shook my hand it was like a superman grip.
Never in my life have i seen that repeated. His handshake was like coiled steel, the strongest and
firmest and seemingly almost invincible i've ever encountered, to this day.

What an inpression that made on me and what an awful day it was when he too was assassinated.

what a great memory, but you wont find anything like that happening here anymore...even the politicians that have came here probably would never come back.....take a good look around, its a sad broke down poverty stricken area and our own mayor doesnt care, unless its in HIS neighborhood...sorry 4 the rant, but your memory sounds like a nice one......

In the 50's, 60's this was a vibrant community with a bustling downtown and a productive manufacturing base. You had an airport with commerical service, the link to the outside world and life blood of any business oriented city. Jobs eventually moved South for lower wages and no unions. Oneida County never recovered. The southern cities grew and are now mega population centers. Look around and you see what remains. Not much.

the paracites started chomping its way through this vibrant city in th 1950s. Their still going at now with any kind of federal or state money they receive for the purposes of rebuilding. They will steal and aim these funds in their own direction, not to the city. Now that thecity has so little to take, they have spread into the county government for a new grab at what they hardly deserve. WE live among europes garbage, or should i say southern european trash as the germans put it.

The only thing that could save this city is to make a trail of watermelon and fried chicken leading out of the city into Oneida lake.

You don't think pumping in refugees was a good idea?
