Yes sir!!! I enjoy ice fishing more than regular fishing even. The scenery, the quite, the other fellow fisherman sneeking peeks at each others catch. Being out on the ice cooking some food and catching some fish while meeting others doing the same is as good as it gets.

I' m pretty stoked about this year. We have not had a decent spread of ice the past couple of years. Nothing better than catching fish and trapping muskrats through the ice.
A really cool thing I notice too is that in the past maybe 6 years it seems more and more people are getting into it. I remember when I was a kid a lot of old timers would be out. Later on it seemed it was dying with them but now that seems to be turning around.

with this cold air and snow the last 3-4 days, any reports of ice in CNY? I'm sure and heard that north of Booneville has 5 inches on Long Lake, etc....

My friend told me they got a few spots of O.K. ice in the 1000 Islands. The cold is good but all this snow is bad. The snow keeps the ice from forming. It insulates the water. I think it's going to be a couple weeks before it gets good. Gotta wait for the snow to stop and the wind to blow it of the thin ice so it can really form.

Maybe. I would still wait until the snow blows off and the ice can see the cold.

Not many ice fishing guides. If I were you I'd check out Iceshanty.com and make friends with someone on there. They will point you in the right direction anyways.

If you're new to it you can just get a few jigging poles ( I prefer the ones without reels or just a simple spool reel) and some jigs and Swedish pimples. Go out and follow the crowds and look for old holes that people left. You can also ask if someone to drill you a hole or bring something to chip out a slightly frozen over one. I now few ice fisherman who will not help out a noob especially if they toss 'em a beer.

So everyone. What do you prefer? Reel, no reel, or spool for your jigging poles.

I fish with tip ups/traps mostly and hop around my set and jig for whatever will bite.Usually go after pike. But make a trip or 2 up north for lake trout.Jigging lake trout is a blast.

I prefer a rod reel combo for a jig rod.Ugly stick sells a decent combo for a decent price.

I just heard that it will be illegal to ice fish in a lake that has trout. Supposedly from a reliable source.

Trout waters where ice fishing is allowed are specifically listed in the regulations guidebook. That is nothing new.

most of the places your not allowed to ice fish are to protect brook trout. At least that is what I was always told.

There are many lakes that are closed to ice fishing because of trout.Usually they are small bodies of water that can't handle the added fishing pressure..Honestly its kinda Bologna because bass are without a doubt the most protected game fish in NY and they are the most adaptable.Where were we..........Trout, yeah there is a tone of lakes that are open year round to trout fishing.Problem with closing it is then you are taking away from the perch guys and pannies..Cause face it most lakes have both.So what they would have to do is close the taking of trout not ice fishing all together. And even then there are communities and groups that would throw a fit.Plus I have seen no such proposition in the DEC list of propostions.
