4,500 for a new car

the only people that bought a new car and recieved the rebate are the people with money. The poor and unfortunate must still drive the clunkers still pay much more for gas because they dont get good mileage. correct me if i am wrong and where are the cars going that are still in ok condition?

What are you saying? Are you saying that people who have bad credit or can't afford ane car should be able to buy them anyway? Isn't that the way we got in this position in the first place?

You are absolutely right. According to the rules of the cash for clunkers program, the cars traded in are supposed to be destroyed regardless of their condition. Not only are the majority of new cars purchased not made in america, the cost of used cars is being driven up. Another government program that doesn't work.

You're right too. This is how it all started. The government made mortgage companies give low interest loans to people that couldn't pay them back. So, to fix the problem, the government took our money and loaned it to mortgage companies and banks and insurance companies...who took golden parachutes and can't pay us back.

the rich and the greedy robbed everyone not, the poor. the rich gamble on the stock market not the poor. the greedy handed the poor an opportunity to live a dream that became a nightmare knowing very well they couldn't pay for it but they made the commision, banks got the loans, everyone made there move and then gas went up people stopped buying and everone was caught with there pants down, now they drive nice cars while the poor pound salt

The reason why clunkers was so sucessful is that the middle class, who Obama has praised as the heart and soul of the country reaps the benefits of this rebate. Trade in your car that gets horribale gas mileage not some crap car that you bought for $500 2 months ago. These are the SUV's that sold 5-10 yrs ago that everybody HAD to have. Bring that in and get $3500-$4500 towards a NEW car. The problem is that everyone bought a Toyota or a honda or a import cuz they get the best gas milelage! The gov't was thinking people would buy american but they can't put a good car out and haven't for 15-20 yrs. Poor people will always drive clunkers cuz that is what they can afford. This program was not designed for the poor it was designed for the middle class that has the money now because they stayed on the "sidelines" of the stock market. If you were smart you would trade that Ford Explorer that get like 10 mi. to a gallon and get a Prius that gets 51 mi. per gallon, that is what the program was designed for, not to give poor people that don't have the money to begin with a car they can't afford!

There were lots of cars traded in that got decent mileage. Why couldn't those have been sold at discount to poor people. Why did they have to be destroyed and put in landfills? They could have said you'll get up to $4500 if you buy an American car that gets good mileage, but they didn't...and the U.S. owes billions to some of the countries that make the cars that were purchased. Now that the cash for clunkers scheme is over...watch auto sales now. There's something "fishy" about the whole scheme. Also, when they come out with their new EPA regulations on car inspections, don't be surprized when it targets the rest of the gas guzzlers (you know, the ones driven by poor people who couldn't afford a new car).

The object of the program was to get the gas guzzlers off the road, and to stimulate the auto business. They are not put in landfills. They are recycled for the steel etc. It wouldn't make any sense to sell these cars to the poor and keep them on the road. We are supposed to be trying to use less oil and gas , not more.

This program reaped benefits for the car dealers. They didn't have to pay for trade-ins and an influx of shoppers bought from them. So they made about $5000 off every sale because they didn't need to make up the money in the trade in.

Now car dealers will suffer again because this surge will lead to no sales.

Where do you think the non-recyclables go? And why did they have to disable every motor by running liquid glass through the block till it siezed if they're just planning to recycle them? Yes it stimulated Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia. The dealers haven't even been repaid the money, which is money they took off the sale price. Not that they didn't make money...but it's not like it's $4500 profit for anybody except the people who bought cars. Don't have all the answers, and there's alot I don't know. I'm just saying.

I think car sales may very well plummet now. People with late model cars before CFC obviously arenít going to be buying. People who could not afford to buy a car even with a CFC deal still wonít be in a position to buy. The people in then middle who did take advantage of the deal wonít be buying. We are still in a recession and even if it does slow down, stop, and/or reverse course it always takes several months, as much as several quarters, for unemployment to improve. The recession also has people hanging onto their existing cars longer. So there wonít be many people out there looking to purchase new cars and the manufacturers will have to slash prices to find new buyers.
