Utica's Mayor Robert Palmieri wants to reduce the number of lanes on Genessee street to tow:

"Taking a boulevard approach, Genessee Street would convert from the current 4 lane roadway to 2 lanes with a landscaped median in between, what's expected to enhance foot traffic, bring more street parking and make the streets safer."

According to WKTV this morning this would come at a cost of $16M dollars.....

I guess it would increase foot traffic as people will become too frustrated too drive....

This mayor is nuts. But since there is no traffic downtown anyways, they could get away with no lanes.

It'll basically belong to the buses because with 1 lane and a medium in the middle there will be no way to pass them. I never seen a city spend so much money on idiot ideas. The roundabout still amazes me especially after I saw a woman goe in the wrong direction 2 weeks ago and just made the whole circle freeze up.

Worst idea ever, but not our current mayors, it's part of Dave's master plan that cost a quarter million of our bucks. A median not now will slow traffic to a halt, but will increase taxes to hire people to maintain it. Please do not do this!!

I guess he's looking to to the number of accidents on this street. I love how people who have no clue in road planning or construction make these head-up-their-ass decisions. Its 4 lanes for a reason. That reason as someone else posted, is the busses. Why not do something useful with the money? I dont normally argue these issues but this one is just assinine.

How about combine 2 problems the mayor thinks he has, if hes really concerned with the lack of parking and turning this street into a clusterf*ck, close the 2 inside lanes to traffic and make parking available there instead. There. Parking problem solved. Traffic problem created. He should be happy. Seems thats what hes looking for anyway. Creating a median doesnt solve anything and concrete costs more than paint. He could do this for under a million dollars, which is why it won't happen.

This guy is insane, where do we find these people who get elected, we go from bad to worse, Utica is doomed with no chance of progresssing, downtown is finished and the reason why is because no one goes there.

It's the only way to address the sewer mandate without having to pay for it but another reason to avoid traveling on Genny altogether.

Who cares, downtown is a ghost town anyways.

Why not eliminate the sidewalks and use the space for parking, no one walks on them anyhow.

It never ends, lol! The endless stupid decisions never cease to amaze me! There is a reason that there isn't any business downtown and it has nothing to do with parking or traffic! Utica does not have the population to support the "life" that it once did, it's that simple! The "larger" of the "smaller" cities like Syracuse still have a large enough population that can and will support a "nightlife" or "downtown" business model.

Way too much government for such a small population. Do we really need all those county legistlators trying to mandate everything in Utica?

What do you expect, Palmieri is about as bright as a 2 watt bulb. He and council members like colosimo, marino, and morehouse along with a few others could not operate a lemonade stand in the desert, they just do not have the brains. The only thing left in Utica that is of any worth is the Valley View Golf Course and they do not know how to market that entity, the parkway ice skating ring and ski slope was once a great thing for the people of this area and they drove it into the ground. The waterboard was sold for peanuts compared to its total worth. We have the same idiots in our city making the same nit wit decisions. Public safety will bankrupt Utica very shortly due to the fact that it should of been reorganized years ago but then again we had and still have nit wits making stupid decisions in our city.

I agree. County legislators and other government should be focused on bringing jobs and opportunities to the area. The reason Utica does not have the population it once had is because local government and county representatives have failed us in the last 30+ years...

Hey Dummies, doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why Utica is dead. NOBODY HERE ANYMORE, FOOLS. Utica use to have 115k population back in the good ole days. Now population is maybe 50k with 30% immigrants who are useless along with blacks. So the actual population is somewhere around 30K with a lot of ederly. Who the fock is coming to downtown? Not NH people, not Wboro people. Come on mayor, you are really that stupid?

Changing to two lanes will only force more people to use the Arterial. Which by the way will probably be torn up at the same time.

Wanna see it will work ? Cone off a mile of road the way you want to change it to for a week. See what happens ...

What are you going to do when you get some person who doesent care or know how to drive and goes 2 miles an hour up genesee street holding up traffic . There are alot of those idiots driving the streets of that hole of a city. The road rage idiots, and there are alot of them in utica also are going to clash on the streets of genesee Street and watch the fireworks began. I will personally stay off genesee street if that foolish move is made to genesee street and I will take sunset or oneida and so will many other reasonable persons and then there goes genesee street and business location advantage.
