Utica is for losers and where dreams went to die. You'll be so much better off if you get out of there.

The Best food in region and elsewhere.

The Stanley Theater

Varick Street/Brrewery

Munson Williams

AHL

Cost of living here is great

Many local colleges

Close proximity: 25 mins to a Casino/Racino.
1hour45 to Saratoga.50 mins to Adirondacks. 4 hours from NYC ETC...

All the negative talkers Either A. Are pessimist and look at the bad side (and exaggerate). B. Are too afraid to move elsewhere so ragging on Utica makes them feel better.

The bad part of the area is nothing to do with the economy or the city itself. It's the negative speaking people.

Or,

C. Long term residents who have witnessed the decline of the region and see the ineptitude and corruption that is at the root of it.

Or,
D. Long term residents who are rightfully skeptical having lived through scheme after taxpayer funded scheme that just never seem to live up to the hype.

E. Long term residents who have lived through economic cycles where the city never seems to benefit in good times and always seems to suffer in the bad.

You are confusing negative with realistic. Utica has been "1hour45 to Saratoga.50 mins to Adirondacks. 4 hours from NYC ETC..." since forever. Has that made a difference so far? Isn't it true that if not for the social service dependent immigrant population Utica would be a lot smaller?

It has everything to do with the economy of the city. Or more to the point, the lack of it. Utica is in decline, has been for many years and will continue to be as long as those in power fail to address the systemic problems that make it that way and try to peddle a boatload of bull like the economic development videos.

I cannot understand why so Uticans make such a big deal about the mundane and ordinary. All of the "good" things you mention about Utica are simply nothing more than ordinary. You can find any of these anywhere in any other place. Half moons and riggies do not constitute a significant reason for anyone to move to Utica. I have lived here for way too many years, and have only seen the area decline. I have heard promise after promise after another promise about how great and wonderful things are just around the corner. Yet nothing good ever happens. The Stanley is nice, but other places have nice theatres also. Who cares about Bass Pro Shops. They have hundreds of stores all over the place. Only in Utica will you find people who get excited about the mediocre. Open your eyes and you will see that we have very few good paying jobs here. We have very little in the way of culture. There is no quality nightlife. Yes, these things exist here, but only on a tiny scale. A minor league hockey team is nothing to jump up and down about, when other places have major league teams. Utica is in a death spiral. You folks just keep on playing your fiddles while the empire burns.

You make a great point.

I remember in the not too distant past when the front page, headline story was about the re-opening of a refurbished McDonald's in New Hartford complete with a large color photo. Talk about celebrating the ordinary.

Good would be if there were plenty of good (non-public sector) jobs for anyone who wanted to work.

Good would be if the high school graduation rate in the region's largest district was at least above 70%. I think it stands at 58% right now I think and there is no smoother, quicker path to poverty/social service dependence than to drop out of high school.

Good would be if the public sector wasn't dominated by unions who make their deals behind closed doors with elected officials who are supposed to be representing the interest of the taxpayers but don't.

Good would be if Oneida County didn't have the highest sales tax rate in the United States.
