I grew up in the Utica area in the 50's and left after college and a few years at GE's radio receiver department. In scanning this forum I'm chagrined at most of the subject matter, language and aspersions that I see here. It sounds like a third world country. There must be some normal people still living in Utica. Just curious, don't mean to start an argument.

When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
* Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
* The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic.

Interracial Crime

* Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
* Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.
* Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
* Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.

Gangs

* Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
* Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.

Weapons violations are committed by Blacks at nearly 5 times the rate for Whites;

Blacks are caught receiving or buying stolen property at nearly 5 times the rate for Whites;

Blacks are involved in prostitution at almost 4 times the rate for Whites;

Blacks are arrested for drug crimes at over 4 times the rate for Whites;

Blacks are more than three times as likely as Whites to be caught at forgery, counterfeiting, and fraud, and almost three times as likely to be caught at embezzlement;

Blacks are more than 3 times as likely to be thieves as Whites;

Blacks are more than 4 times as likely to commit assault as Whites;

Blacks are almost 4.5 times as likely to steal a motor vehicle;

Blacks are more than 5 times as likely to commit forcible rape as Whites;

Blacks are over 8 times as likely to commit murder as Whites;

Blacks are more than 10 times as likely to commit robbery as Whites;

Nearly 25% of all Black males between the ages of 20 and 29 are in jail or on probation - this does not include those wanted or awaiting trial;

For all violent crimes considered together, Blacks are almost 5.5 times more likely to commit violent criminal acts than Whites; all this according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report.

Blacks are four times more likely than Whites to kill their children...

28% of black males go to jail, vs. 4.4% of White males

68.7% of blacks are born out of wedlock!

56% of black women have genital herpes!!!

62% of ALL black births are paid for by the US government.

But Utica has drastically changed. Aspirations of the current generation include, hustling, becoming a rap star, getting high, posting half naked pics on FB, hooking up and having multiple kids with different partners then expecting everyone else to raise them and support them. Deciding which pair of Pjs to wear to Walmart on the first of the month. Complaining about everything. The normal people either moved out or live in hiding.

There was still manufacturing in Upstate NY in the 50's. It's been gone for decades and the area has crumbled into a "third world". No jobs, abandoned houses and crime. Many of us left the area years ago.

The leaders of Utica NY and Oneida County are driving this place right into the ground, Their are a lot of Great people here, hard workers, But with fewer jobs, and MORE and More Welfare funding sucking up the working people tax dollars, working class people are leaving New York state, and also so just adding more and more laws to the books instead of just enforcing the one we have now.

Awesome news today. The city of Utica is coming back strong. What you see on here is a small few that hate themselves.

You are SPOT ON! Our many institutions of higher learning produce quality graduates and watch them leave our area for greener pastures because opportunities in their fields of study are rare. Until the citizens of the Mohawk Valley get rid of the garbage political landscape here, the area will continue to suffer.

you dont get it. There are plenty if people in this area that have good jobs. They can bring in all the jobs they want. No one is going to buy a home or rent in cornhill or west Utica, they choose to live and spend their money outside of Utica. Things wont get better til their is a tax base again. At this point the best plan would be to tear down the slums, drive out the scum and rebuild. But no the brilliant politicians tear down houses to build more subsidized housing, which these people will only destroy again. If you remember when loretto came in they fixed up all those houses. Here we are a few years later and how does Oneida st look. Same over by Munsons.

I am disappointed as well. I am a home bound senior who the other forme members don't know how to treat their elders. It is not how your mother said it would be.

According to my wife who works at a homeless shelter here in Utica, this place is known throughout the state as the easiest place to get on welfare. We are also mandated by law to find shelter for the homeless. Because of this we get many of the "welfare" types. People come here from all over and get free medical, shelter, food, and other benefits within 45 days of arriving.
Utica has become the welfare city. Thankfully crime really isn't that bad compared to other city's. We might get a murder or 2 every summer. But compared to Detroit or other high black populated areas, Utica isn't that bad crime wise.
Also, forget about going anywhere on the 1st few days of the month. Ugghh. Can't get anything done on those days.

The problem with Utica, is that it really has nothing exceptional to offer to anyone who has any idea what things are like in most other parts of the country. Utica is mired in the mediocre. It is an unremarkable city with nothing special or interesting. There are plenty of well educated, talented people here. Eventually, they all wind up leaving for other places. With very limited opportunities, smart young people have no reason to live here. The best and brightest will make more money and live better lives most anywhere else. Anyone in Utica who has any degree of success, has acheived that success because they are related by marriage or birth to certain Utica families. There is really not much going on here. There is little to no nightlife. There is no culture. No worthwhile sports, or a high frequency of quality entertainment. We have all the things here that you can find anywhere else, and nothing that is truly special or unique. I do not consider tomatoe pie or chicken riggies worthy of local pride. A new, silly roundabout traffic circle in the center of a ghetto is not a source of civic pride. The Boilermaker roadrace is the only thing in Utica that approaches anything of importance. However, this once a year event does not make up for the other 364 days of boredom. I feel that the negative tone of many of these posts are due to most people expressing their frustrations with life in this area. We know things can be better, but we are powerless in effecting any change. Too many native Uticans don't realize how disgusting this area is, and are content to live in this urban dump. Many of us are embarrassed by the local media, most notably WKTV, which is laughably bad, and incoherent. Whenever I'm asked by someone where I'm from, I never admit to living in Utica. My response is that I live close to Syracuse. I wish I lived in a city that I could be proud to say I was from, but sadly, when most people hear "Utica", they are already aware of its bad reputation.
