My first experience with this tunnel system is around 50yrs ago. Believe me, it's changed from my first visit but you can enjoy yourself with the present system. You can still enter near Burstone Rd, along side Rt.12 and when it isn't raining, the water isn't a problem, usually around 1-2" except for one spot which is a drop-off to around 6" for a few feet. Be prepared to walk bent-over if you're tall, the ceiling drops in places and if you are in the metal pipe sections, the bolt nuts could play havoc with your head. I just walk in the center of the pipe and wear a thick hat. I would estimate that it would take you approx. an hour to get to the Brewery Parking lot and the large chamber there. When I'm in the concrete section that bends to the left at a nice angle I know I'm under Rt. 12 and Carl's Furniture. You also can see through the boards covering the RR tracks near by. In the small chamber, you can see that the original tunnel system (straight ahead)is blocked-off that circled the Polish Community Club and headed to the Mohawk. The small chamber has a spillway going left into the large chamber, not a problem unless it's raining like hell and you suddenly have a waterfalls. From this chamber, it's a large, new pipe to the exit and really easy. You exit at the end of Haak Ave and if you look over your shoulder, you'll see the original 1910 exit. In my opinion, if there was ever a situation where you had to get away from oppressive heat due to "whatever" reason, the tunnel system would be a comfortable location. I've climbed-up on the ledge in the small chamber and gone to sleep with it being cool and the sound of running water. The items I'd recommend bringing are boots if water bothers you (I've gone through with leather work boots), something to protect your head from overhead concrete and metal plus a supply of GOOD flashlights. I use LED's with lithium bqtteries for brightness and hours of usage. If two go together, one can illuminate ahead as the other bounces off the ceiling above you so you don't bumb your head. Don't need two people but it's easier and helps pass the time. Bring a camera, lots of interesting stuff to record. Wish I had photos back from the 60's to compare. By the way, you can also reverse the route, I've done this. Have fun!

So nobody should be surprised when Utica starts to be full of huge sinkholes! If you look at some of the streets and how they sag in spots, it's bound to happen.

That Mohawk st tunnel goes all the way from the resevoir to the Mohawk River. There are big brick arches all the way from the parkway down. They just buried the whole creek and the bridges. U can access it from a manhole on 2nd ave as well.

What are we talking about in the way of any water depth? Can it be walked or are flotation equipment necessary?

I think it is mary and 2nd ave. The manhole w the staircase is on the west side of Mohawk st. Across from HUD or one of those agencies. There was a sinkhole in a parking lot and it was a underground brick bridge that gave out and caused it. If u look at the old maps there is a creek that is show running from the parkway to the Mohawk River and it stays on the west side of Mohawk st. Could be mary and blandina but I think it's mary and 2nd ave
