UTICA — A Utica police officer was charged with driving while impaired earlier this month in Niagara Falls, Canada, and currently is suspended without pay.

Officer John Abel was arrested by the Canadian Border Services at about 2 a.m. on Nov. 2 near the Rainbow Bridge, which is one of the main thoroughfares from the U.S. to Canada.

Abel was driving a city-owned grey Ford Fusion at the time of his arrest. He and another city officer had gone to Niagara Falls for training in community policing.

The allegations were disappointing to the department, police Chief Mark Williams said.

“John will be held responsible,” he said.“As a disciplinary matter, this is still ongoing.”

Abel, whose salary last year was $68,515, is in charge of the city’s Armadillo nuisance abatement program and handles other community and public nuisance issues. Those duties are being shared by several officers, Williams said.

“It is a burden for the department,” he said.

Abel was charged with driving while impaired and with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, according to Constable Derek Watson, media officer for the Niagara Regional Police. That is the equivalent of driving with a blood alcohol content over a 0.08 in the U.S.

Abel was arraigned and released. He could not be reached for comment.

The department is not paying Abel’s attorney.

Mayor Robert Palmieri declined to comment, citing personnel rules.

“As city employees, we’re all held to a higher standard, as we should be,” he said.

I GUESS THE MAYOR'S HIGHER STANDARDS IS BUYING HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY A BRAND NEW CAR TO DRIVE THEMSELVES AROUND THE CITY AND TRAVEL WITH, WITH TAXPAYERS MONEY IN JUST HIS FIRST TERM. THE PUBLIC DESERVES A COMMENT ON WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH A PUBLIC SERVANT PAID BY THE TAXPAYERS JUST LIKE IT IS PUBLIC RECORDS FOR ALL CITIZENS. pALMIERI WILL DEFINETELY BE ANOTHER ONE TIME MAYOR WHO IS TAKING HIS TURN TAKING TAXPAYERS TO THE CLEANERS WITH SPEND AND TAXING AND WE THOUGHT ROEFARO WAS GOING TO BE THE WORST MAYOR EVER. IT'S LIKE JULIAN, ROEFARO, AND PALMIERI ARE HAVING A WORSE MAYOR CONTEST BY FUCKING TAXPAYERS UP THE ASS!!!!!

How stupid could this cop be, where else is a guy with such a lack of talent going to make $68,000 a year. Let's face it,most of the UPD is made up of ex UCP or House of Good Shepherd employees who had no where else to go so they took the police exam and got in. Why on earth would you blow $68,000 in salary over a few cheap beers.

In the end, there'll be no punishment. Maybe a little fine, maybe a couple hundred dollars and court fees, and that will be it. He can afford it: $70k a year with a high school diploma. He'll face no jail time and no punishment at work; one law for them; another law for us. He won't get back into Canada, tho'. They don't let DWI offenders in. Sorry, Officer McTipsy.

And he is Not a Stupid Cop..He has a big heart for people out there..And he does his job the way it should be done!

Nothing will happen. Just like Beth Shanley. Nothing but corrupt in this city. Drunk cops, DA's that let Garramone pedophiles off with out having to register as sex offenders, perverts playing with themselves in park and nothing happens. But boy oh boy when you get a DWI posted all over Facebook and ask these blowhards say good job upd. Well now what??? Good job Canadian police another drunk corrupt UTICA OFFICER BUSTED!!!!

The city of Utica needs to do something or call someone and get them in here and take this city over fire all of the police and DA's Mayotte and all of city hall. State needs to come in and take it over and start all over. To many friends and family benefits going on. The city LEO AND City hall its more corrupt than the people they are arresting.

@thunder, He is good at not getting caught. And I'm so sick of you people that bash everyone they put on Facebook for similar crap but when an officer does it, its a mistake. Or he is only human. BS he is an officer of the law and should be held to a higher standard. You hypocrites shouldn't Erin your mouths on Facebook and then come here and name excuses for the crooked cops. He should lose his job just like he had caused for so many others that he gave DWI's to. He should be humiliated on Facebook like they do to everyone infuse and claim its public knowledge. This police force is a joke. This city is an even bigger joke

I don't care if he had one beer. He is an officer who has no problem handing out the DWI So he should have known better. He was there for training on taxpayers dollar not on vacation. If he is allowed to keep his job it is going to cause one jerk of an uproar. @Dana, yes as a matter of fact I have had a couple with dinner and I also got a dwi and spent thousands of dollars in fines and lawyer fees and lost a great job. But I bounced back. Now it's his turn. Sorry but what good fire the goose is good for the gander.

Hey Dana, you retard! First off it says "at least .08%" not that it was that. Second, An average drink will raise your BAC .02% and you will lose .02% every hour. So either he drank at least 4 drinks extremely fast and immediately got pulled over, or he had a lot more than "2 drinks at dinner"

Actually, it says "it's a content over .08%" which they are stating because that's their legal limit. So it even have been much higher!
