For someone that knows Utica history - if anyone is still monitoring ...

There are history "stories" in my family of my great grandfather working for/with/connected to the Bananno Family at the Utica bank. This would be somewhere in the the early 1900's - 1910 - 1940 maybe? Is this possible? If so - anyone want to share some history?

Much thanks in advance.

Yes it's possible. If you heard stories, it's probable.

Utica was the stop-over on the way to buffalo for the mobsters. Remember, there was no thruway.
Utica came to be known as Sin City because they built up the gambling and brotheling business so they would have "stuff" to do on the over-night. This obviously spawned legitimate endeavors due to what happened to Capone.

I suspect this is where your relative came in.
I would offer to ask some questions for you, but I am sure any participants are now gone. Plus I don't want wind up dead. You might laugh but you never know what might set these morons off.

Believe me, they still exist here. Probably the steroid -laced grandkids who still think they are mobsters.

Utica was so corrupt that the Knapp Commission was brought in to clean up the city pd. I would think the stories y ou were told are fact based on the history.

Just goes to show you how much the Italians have ruined this city.
You are an idiot!! When in the day, Ruffie was around-Utica had work for all!
It was a bustling place, and everyone had a job! As soon as he past away-it all went to hell, industry left- GE-Univac-all the factories left-causing many youth to leave the area! The rest like me got stuck in the 70's without any future! No work-and if you did get it, you were treated like shit, because they knew there was 100 people lined up to take your place!
If not for our Italian community we would never have had the chance to have anything!

In the 50's when all this went down, there was 2 sisters who ran whores in Utica-the Burke sisters. Who-paid cops off when they got busted, they sang- cops-city employees-and others went to jail. There were many houses in the city then. Utica was called "Sin City" or "little Chicago"
Criminals sought out to dwell here. or until the "heat was off. As a kid, we all knew about it, myself would run gambling slips to third ave for change spent at the corner store.
You knew who was and who was not connected then.
