I think they came in AHEAD on this survey. I don't understand why this area is so depressing.

No jobs. The few that have one and a home with a family spend too much of our check on fees and taxes to support the employment of a friend of a friend. No infrastructure, if you're lucky to have a car you spend way too much maintaining it after the city roads are done with it. Night life, forget about it. If you're lucky to find a place you enjoy, UPD will scrutinize it until its shut down or no one attends, unless the owner is a friend of a friends. The city is old and anyone who tries to inject youthfulness quickly realizes its a dead end road because the old people run this town.

This survey tells it like it is. Utica is an extremely depressing place to live in. Some of the natives might not believe this because they have spent all their lives here and have nothing else to compare it to. People in this area don't know how to smile. There is nothing here to make anyone smile. Crappy jobs, awful night life. There just is no hope left for this godawful town.
lol

The only people living in this area are the people who have old relatives to look after that refuse to move, or the welfare mooches. That's all that's left. If you want welfare $, move to upstate NY.
Your right sad

If my Grandma (96) and my mother (76) weren't in this area, I'd leave for sure. But who would look after them???? I want to leave so badly!!!! I'm getting up in age too!

Im over 50 and I want to come back more and more. I have stayed in touch with alot of school day friends over the years, plus visit a couple three times a year. Not crazy at all about NY winters but could see myself living up there again.

Don't confuse nostalgia and homesickness with the the sad state of affairs here. You may miss Utica because you grew up here, but your memories are no longer the reality of what this place is like. It is miserable here and it just keeps getting worse. Keep your good memories of Utica, but keep in mind that this is no longer the place you remember growing up in. My advise to you is: Don't look back!

One of the things that disappoints me about Utica is Conkling Park not being open until late spring or summer. I love riding my bike through the park, and on one of those rare days in spring when the weather is warm, I find the gates to the park locked. What is the point of having such a nice park if it is closed for much of the year? This is one of the things that contributes to the sadness that is Utica.

I didn't realize that there are 178 places worse than Utica/Rome. Is this good news?

I wound up spending about 2 months total last summer and fall. This year I'm going to try about 2 months straight and see how that goes. I don't mind a bit getting away from the hot humid temps of the southeast in the summer. I like having the casino right down the road and maybe a road trip to the Niagra Falls casinos.

If it works for you great, but the landscape has changed so much, not even safe anymore.

If my family wasn't here, I wouldn't be either. Some new leadership might help a little...someone that wasn't in the good old italian boys club.
