I agree with you also. We should not have to pay extra in taxes for a ahl team to come here.
I thought that the state gives us 2 million towards paving. That is what I read on wktv. Am I mistaken.
First, it's not the state that gives the money. It is the taxpayers of the sstate of New York The "state" has no miney of its' own.

There was a referendum a few years ago where the people of Utica decided to mandate $2 million paving be done each year. The city does recieve CHIPS funding (from the taxpayers of New York state)but it only partially offsets the cost. This year that amount is projected to be $1.5 to $1.6 million leaving a $400,000 to $500,000 gap between what they are getting and what is mandated. That money has to come from somewhere and is not in the budget that was just passed.

I would like to clarify my position here. I began this thread under the wrong assumption after misreading the od article about Aqua Vino. I have already apologized for that. I believe that Esche is doing what he believes is a service to this community, attempting to obtain a franchise for AHL hockey. I disagree with the use however, of any NYS tax money for this purpose in the current economic environment.

That's just not true especially if this is going to be in the millions for AUD upgrades for no other reason than to accomodate an AHL team. This is a private business that should be financed by those who want it. If they bought a piece of property, put up a building and signed a contract saying they would stay for an extended period then maybe, just maybe I might be for a tax break on the property. But to expect that taxpayers should foot the bill for this is ridiculous. That's why I'm betting that if there is a deal it will be Assemblyman Brindisi who will be behind it showing once again how clueless I think he is.

No more taxpayer supplied welfare for things like this. Haven't we learned our lesson a number of times over when it comes to financing private enterprise?

Really? You do realize us here in Saratoga County spent 70 million dollars upgrading the water system two years before we got the computer chip plant all on the prospect of getting it?

Strawman alert!

There is no comparison between upgrades to infrastructure in order to attract that kind of business (and therefore well paid jobs) and funding the needs of a hockey team. Especially a hockey team that has a history of taking what they can get and then moving on when either a better deal comes along or the "public teat" dries up.

As someone has already stated, infrastructure upgrades benefit all who use the systems whether it's water, sewer or roads.

I just read a story about the passage of the New York State budget at the OD site. It describes an empassioned plea by a legislator to restore some funding for disabled children that was cut. He lost that fight. If there is one red cent in that budget for this effort to get an AHL team in Utica then all involved should be ashamed and run out of town on a rail.

Are you kidding me? Fund a hockey team and the move of Jimmy Kimmel's show from LA to New York before taking care of children who thorugh no fault of their own need help? Use your head. that just defies common sense. But that's also why I think it may well happen though and that it will be Brindisi who'll be behind it.
