I agree 100% USPS provides a "service", try sending a Letter across the country with Fed ex or UPS.....46 cents? I don't think so.

Who's talking about profit?
Just revenue neutral would be nice.

We don't know if a private entity could economically and effectively do the job the USPS does because no one has ever been allowed to try. There is a monopoly on mail delivery. I think that outsourcing should be explored with the qualifier that whatever entity bids on this work has to take rural delivery along with the more profitable and easier urban delivery.

Better yet, let private concerns handle the retail/sorting end and then have the USPS take care of delivery. The private sector does most everything better and more efficiently than government does. It's what happens when profit is the motivator.

To answer your other question - OTB right here in New York is a profitable quasi-government entity.

Which other Government services are revenue neutral? The Military????I'm sure the private sector would run our Military more efficiently.
Ask any service member who has served beside a "private contractor" doing the same work, while the service member makes 1/10 of the pay.

Operating costs are not what is sinking the postal service, it's all the massive pension liabilities for its employees. If the postal service wants to save money then they should cut out pensions and switch to a 401K system.
I'm sure forcing 100's of thousands of Postal Employees to join the rest of the Private Sector in the "Race to the Bottom" would be a great boost to our economy......oh wait, that's what put us in this position! 30 years of Reaganomics.

The comparison between the USPS and the military is a straw man and is ridiculous. The USPS is neither a government agency nor is it a private business. It's a hybrid. On one hand while it relies on revenue from the services it provides for survival, it has all of the attitudes and bureaucratic baggage that make government the black hole for tax dollars that it is. The military is pure government.

If the USPS were truly private and operating under the same business plan it has now it would have gone the way of the Betamax tape and buggy whip long ago. That's just not the way government works though.

So then the thing to do in your opinion is to further tax the private sector in order to prop up a failed business model? That's insane.

Do you know how to read?

The poster asked what other government entity is profitable. I answered that question by saying that in New York OTB turns a profit. OTB is run by New York State.

I personally hate the idea of government using gambling as a revenue stream. I think the problems it causes on the back end do not justify the money that is made on the front end. There is a local coffee shop that sells NYS lottery scratch tickets. The owner calls them "cardboard crack" because there are many people who seem to be addicted to them and more times than not they are people, who from looking at them, should probably be buying groceries and soap instead. The shop owner also talks about the uptick in lottery sales around the first of each month. While this is only a microcosm I'm thinking this same scenario plays out all across the country every day. Does that sound like something government should be using as a revenue stream?

So what?

The government is not a business, the USPS is (at least partially).
If the government had to live by all of the conventional rules of business the People of the United States of America would have been in bankruptcy court long ago.

I personally think that if our representatives who hold the purse strings had more of a business mindset we'd all be better off financially. I look at Congressman Richard Hanna as an example. He was a successful businessman before going to congress. He knows what it takes to run and maintain a business. That includes knowing all of the roadblocks that government throws up that hinders business. Now he has inside knowledge of all of the money that government wastes and is in a position to do something about it.

You and people like you talk about House Republicans as the
"party of no" and say that they aren't doing anything. From my point of view they are the party of "no I won't let big government, tax and spend, liberal Democrats run our country any further into debt". Also from my point of view I couldn't disagree more when you say they are doing nothing. Using every legislative tool at their disposal to stop those things that they believe are not prudent, not constitutional and counterproductive certainly is doing something in my book.

Think about this. Is it that they are doing nothing or is it that they are doing nothing that you want them to do. It's obviously the latter.

Really? Private sector 401K plans are a race to the bottom? If you want to see a real race to the bottom look no further than Detroit and Stockton, CA, cities that went broke from unsustainable bloated public pension costs.
How many "Hard working Americans" lost their 401k "savings" each time the stock market crashes? Yes that's right the "Race to the bottom"......Not to mention those who barely earn enough to survive certainly do not have the ability to fund a 401k or any other "retirement savings" plan.
