The city's Urban Renewal Agency typically only deals with homes.
But recently the agency auctioned off two commercial properties that
will be turned back into small businesses.
In Oneida Square, Bob Donnelly, owner of City Gym, is moving just down
the roundabout to 1301 Oneida St. Donnelly currently rents the building
on Oneida Street, where his gym is located, and he believes moving down
the block will help improve the entire neighborhood, he said.
We want to become an anchor for the area, he said.
He also plans on expanding, since his available space will more than
triple from 6,000 square feet to roughly 20,000 square feet.
That expansion will include a tanning salon, vitamin shop and juice bar.
Donnelly owns 13 properties in the city, mostly apartments. He
purchased the site for $7,500.
Bringing back commercial properties, such as 1301 Oneida St., can
change the complexion of a neighborhood, said Gene Allen, the agency's
No one else has anything like, he said.It can become a destination
business for the area.
Over in East Utica, a dilapidated garage will be the new home for a
roofing company as it expands.
Russ Pelli, owner of Northeast Roofing and Asbestos, is buying the
garage at the corner of Albany and Rutger streets for $10,000.
As someone who grew up in the area, reinvesting in the neighborhood was
crucial to his decision to expand, he said.
I drive by it every day; I've seen it deteriorate over the years, he
The garage also will serve as a laboratory of sorts.
As green roofing methods become more popular, Pelli wants to be ready
for customers looking to make their roof environmentally friendly, and
he is using those methods on his new garage.
Pelli said he plans to have the garage up and running within four to
He also wants to make the lot in front of the garage a space community
groups can use for fundraisers, such as car washes.
We'll buy the soap, provide water free of charge, he said.
The Common Council will vote on whether to approve the properties' sale
at its Aug. 14 meeting.

More inconsequential vapid hype about micro businesses for the ignorant utica folk to go gasm gaga about.
Utica;s worst problem is its hype and claiming their shthole isn't a shthole.
They couldn't even get the $8Million grant because they have wasted and squandered the last grants and ended up in court.
Word must have got out that they wanted to pay friends & family and cop slob overtime instead of what the grant was for.
you know, like they usually do!

Good for them. Glad they are investing their hard earned money here. Thank you to both of them. We appreciate it and I will support your new businesses.

Yeah, I bet you will support these secondary service "industries". That settles the decades of decline in the worst state to do business in now the city will be like Manhattan all because of a roofing company, a gym for the corrections steroids crew, a tanning salon, a vitamin shop and a juice bar.
Yup you finally solved the age old inbreeding corruption, racism, piss poor education, dumbed down residents, urban rot, utter lack of leadership and liberal tax & spend police state problems with that major business move there.
Finally, all they needed was an "anchor" and "destination" plan!
They all say the same.
So who handed out the grants and buttkiss?

Love that post^.doesnt take much to excite the utica inbreds.when someone actually calls it like it really is they get all wound up.face utica and the whole valley is dead. There is nothing short of a nuclear weapon that could solve upstates problems.feel good storys of investment and pipe dreams of development that never unfolds.so easy for everyone who is based in reality to see.but uticans have lied so much they actually believe it.what a ses pool of grime.bout time for another sweep mr mayor.is this guy an idiot or what?bye bye to his 8 million dollar idiotic idea. The state knows any money that is sent here is wasted.the corruption is so deep that the officials dont even trust each other. The story lines couldnt even be written. And the police state mentality is just so inviting. The motto should be come for a visit leave with a felon.face its over turn of the red sign and get the hell out.

Nothing but a bunch of jealous people rambling about what you couldn't do . Give the people credit wgo are buying these buildings and putting back on the tax rolls instead of them being torn down. You people bad mouth everything, don't like this city then move out and don't come back.
