I used to live around the building on Noyes St. I used to ride my bike through the middle of the property. I used to see the people that live on the west end of the campus walk around all the time or go to Dari Del on the corner of Noyes and York. Also when I was younger I used to go into the old building on whitesboro st. We used to go in the back up the fire escape, way before they put up a fence to keep people out. Even then we used to go under the fence and go in the building. I didnt see anything in there but then again we didnt spend hours in there looking around. not sure if we were in the second or third floor. This was in the mid 90's

Does anyone know if the buildings other than the "Old Main" were named? My Grandfather lived there from 1933 until his death in 1959. I was told that he lived in a separate building possibly called Demore. He had a vegetable garden just outside of the building he lived in. He could also go into town if he wanted. Am curious to know which building it was and if a picture of it is available. Thanks

You need D the shadowman him and his friends love that creepy kind of place. If D the shadowman can't help you I don't know who could find a map or look for it. They jus took down some of the smaller places but there are still bldngs all over there. I can easily picture one of them having had a garden they are all over the place in there.

hi if any one is interested in knowing about the newer
Marcy asylum. aka Marcy state hospital. go to the
Rome forum. the Marcy asylum.com . and hear about
some history about Marcy. the school that was before
pinefield children's unit. crane hill school was marcy's
children's unite . this school got it's name from the
family cemetery. of the crane family. the cemetery was
also called crane hill. long before this school was
started. crane hill school was the two story building
closets to the crestwood gulf curse club house. just inside the prison fance .it has a fire escape at both ends
of the building. this building is now known as
building 27 of midstate correctional facility. hear from the children of crane hill. cause we still live
#88 Mar 4, 2013
the crane family cemetery is next to the Marcy asylum
Inmate cemetery. almost across from the old Marcy
farm colony building on river rd. but a little to the east
you can google it. the name CRANE HILL has a creepy
ring to it. kind of like. THE CHILDREN OF THE CORN.
I love spooky stories . but this is one that I got to be
part of. both the Marcy and Utica asylum's it wasn't
Quality care. It was quality SCARE . cause
ASYLUMS and CEMETERIES. seem to go together
fire and gasoline.

O and how about this one. you have heard about the
devils triangle in Bermuda. well upstate new York had it's own version. in the Utica Rome area there were
three noteris mental institutions. and if you ever looked
at a map of there locations. they would form a triangle.
hance. our version of the devils triangle.
Rome state school was the lower left corner.
Utica state hospital was the lower right corner.
and Marcy state hospital was the top of this triangle.
ware people used to disappear. boy how creepy is that

a lot of ASYLUMS look like cemeteries. look at the in
Utica. old main looks like a giant musileam. in a
grave yard. THE CEMETERY FOR THE LIVING.
this old building I like to call it
THE TEMPLE OF DOOM

I remember one night in CRANE HILL the lights went out
droing a thunder storm. it was like a Sean in the house
on hunted hill. it was creepy. I bet a night in old main
was even more fun. I also remember those giant
skeleton keys the keepers or attendants would carry.
o yea. the changing of those keys. it's something you

I have an ideal for a good story line in honour of these
places. and a good title for the story. it would be called
MAYHEM STATE HOSPITAL were not all there takes on
a whole new meaning. so let your imagination run wild
or how about a new line of DOG FOOD called
CRANO-RATION or CRANE HILL RATION.
in honour of CRANE HILL SCHOOL
#93 Mar 4, 2013
and in the Utica Rome area MAYHEM is spelled
M A R C Y . when I was there in the 60s it wasn't
much fun at all. but now I like to make fun of a place and
chituation. that should have never happened to me. and
lots of other poeple across the country

in the 80s I used to give some of my friends the tour of
terra. driving thrue the grounds of both the Marcy and
Utica asylums. playing the song SANITARIUM by
METALLICA a hard rock heavy metal band. on my
car sterio system. when ever I hear this song. I think of
home. and at Marcy we would finish the tour with a stop
at the legindary MARCY TAVERN. cause here every day
was helloween. a lot of the employees were just as
crazy as the inmates were

in reality crane hill school wasn't that bad from the
beginning. but later in the late 60s to 70s it started going
bad. they started to get more severely disturbed children
there. it became more of a lock down type of a facility
almost prison like. I got out of there just in time. I was
discharged in 1969. at first crane hill school was almost
like summer camp or a boarding school.when I was there. they had a lot of cut and scratch cases. but later
they started to get some real little monsters in there.
wild as all hell
#96 Mar 4, 2013
this may sound sick. coming from an ex asylum inmate
I think that it was a mistake to abandon our asylums.
they had there place. but It's about the almighty dollar
and not about the quality care that these places should
have pervidid to poeple in need. the term ASYLiupposed to mean a place of safe keeping and healing
and not torture and mayhem. like we hear about all the
time. in reality Marcy did pervide some good care at times.
but there was also some abuse to

I was one of them teenagers that ended up there at Utica State. I was at the newer building on Noyes Street. All new patients were sent to the violent ward on the 5th floor aka "the bridal suite." There was one of them unwanted wives there also. She was known as Matawan Mary as her husband initially sent her to Matawan to get rid of her. I don't know what I would have done without her when a violent patient attacked me. I was 16 years old. They both were injected with 150mg of Thorazine that would zone people out for days.
Mary was the only person on the bridal suite who the nurses would unlock the door for & let her walk the grounds.
It was a depressing place to be for a 16 year old. The doctors would punish you if you didn't conform to their idea of what was normal in the late 1960's. If they didn't believe in interracial dating & you did, they'd label you a schizophrenic.

Why after all this time have they not torn the buildings down? It is an eyesore, a waste of land, and so many newer buildings for business could be built there. If they are owned by the NYS Department of Health, aren't the building's unhealthy to occupy? Not sure if they are planning major renovations in the future for those building's so they can bring the State Hospital back to it's full function. It's sad how generation after generation of stories go on about the Old State Hospital, and we still have to look at it.

It will cost millions and millions of doallars to raze those building. The newer high rise on Noyes is loaded with aesbestos per Tim Julian and can't be used without abatement. Its a shame. The old director's house was stunningly beautiful and justs sitsthere boarded up when it could have been released as a residence. Its just an example of the waste that accounts for the huge taxes in NYS. BTW most of the patients did not have their lives enhanced when they were turned loose without life skills or support.

It will be a FEMA Federal regional center

You know it costs money to do things like that right??
I'd much rather look at a bunch of disused buildings than a big empty lot, Utica has enough big empty lots!!
The City of Utica has more important things it needs to be spending money on.
Just because you think these buildings are an eyesore doest mean they are...
