If you have not heard the news yet, 15 contractors and workers were fired without cause from their jobs at the Hampton Inn construction site in the New Hartford Business Park behind Lowe’s. The 15 are owed in excess of $30,000 in back pay and back wages from Larry Adler who is a big developer in the area. He is the man responsible for clear-cutting the apple orchards, and propping up all the developments in that part of New Hartford over the last 10 years. Adler has a pretty bad reputation in that line of work, and hired some abusive general contractors in the past. He is running the construction of The Hampton Inn.
There are many OSHA violations at the worksite, and severe mistreatment of workers, including verbal and physical abuse of a number of workers. The building itself is also not structurally secure in any way. There is black mold in the building, a weak structure in spots, and unsecured trusses that were intentionally put in to cut costs.
WUTR has covered this in the past; WKTV and the OD covered it yesterday. Please look for a story in The Utica Phoenix that will come out this Friday.
Occupy Utica has done our best to support the picketers and will continue to work with them until justice is found. The contractors and workers are planning on continuing the picket on Wednesday until they get their stolen money back.
