Hockey Admin, The Aud Authority also has a lease to manage the Aud and it is expiring. U.C. will stay but a large corp. that owns several arenas already will own the Aud and the AHL team. I understand why you think this will fail and I agree with the arguments that it will. This is going to happen though. Like it or not.

Well, neither you nor I can be proven correct or incorrect until we see what the future brings. The regional authority is the sole operator of the Utica Aud for a purpose. It is the same reason that the Sports Authority is the operator of Murnane Field. Municipalities like Utica and Oneida County cannot, by law, raise monies to operate these facilities in the way that state authorities are allowed to. That is why the ownership will not change hands, and why we will not have pro hockey here.

You make good points Hockey Admin. I don't know the legalities involved but I do know that at least some current aud tenants and U.C. for sure know that this is in the works.

UC has recently signed a 5 year contract with the Regional Aud Authority. There may be 'talks in the works' but the road to pro sports in Utica is filled with 'potholes'. Please excuse the sarcasm.

UC did sign a contract not that long ago. However, they are listed as a secondary tenant. In the absence of a primary tenant, UC has priority scheduling. So UC is not an issue. Also, when Dolgan bought the Crunch he put in a waiver of territorial rights for Utica. He can not change that, so a new team would not have to pay the Crunch. Finally, per AHL rule any venue that has previously hosted an AHL team is exempt from any arena requirements.

Bottom line, this is all about money. Rangers pay $15,000 rent per game in Hartford to get 3800 fans. Can they make more money here with lower rent but fewer fans?

This has nothing to do with making money. The Rangers are owned by MSG. You think they need income from AHL?

While I do somewhat agree with the Rangers not needing money, why would they leave Hartford. Money is always in the equation.

Tickets were only $8 then. However, you're right, we'll never see the AHL again or any pro hockey as long as UC is here. They put too much money into the Aud to be bounced by anyone else. I wish we had pro hockey though.
Maybe contact someone from the Federal Hockey League (Pro "A" League) and have the team play at the Clinton Arena, that is, if anyone in the area is willing to invest in a team. The Rome Frenzy was a flop because of poor coaching and management, IMO. Maybe Utica can do better. As for UC Hockey, they pretty much own the show at the Aud. We should leave it that way!

I know many people state that UC draws these big crowds, which is true. However, they only play on Fri. & Sat. nights. This is when you get the biggest draw. I'd like to see the attendance on Tues. or Wed. night. This is where we'll see how much people enjoy UC hockey. I know when we had pro hockey, our biggest draw were on weekend nights as well. This is why I don't think it's fair to compare attendance figures.

I think it depends on which Franchise moved into the AUD? I think if the Rangers moved up here I think it would be a success. If it were any other team I doubt it would have much support!!! I love going with my kids to a UC Game but having the Rangers here I would buy season tickets!!

Never again. AHL was here when Utica had a higher population willing to spend the ticket prices. We have UC Hockey which is pretty great considering it sells out The Aud routinely.
It sells out with the help of free tickets given out

It's easier to sell tickets or atleast to get people to catch a game at the Aud on a weekend night which is when UC plays. If we had an AHL team that only played their home games on weekends they'd sell just as many if not more tickets.

i went to the uc game last fiday. The crowd was announced as 3800the but i would guess there were 2000 to 2200 i the seats. And besides the fact that all games are weekends you will have to figure in that uc tickets are 6 bucks and down. A ahl team would be 20 bucks and up. How many familys will you draw and whos going to buy tickets and not show up like uc has no shows??

Exactly! People like to compare attendances as well. I'd like to see what UC would draw on a weekday. The old AHL averages of course include weekdays which brings the average down.

I hope it happens. People are dwelling on the failure of it. I'd say let the deal be made. To have an NHL professional franchise go and pump money into our community and our hockey arena is golden. Maybe the Rangers (if that whose considering the move) wants to create a complex for their AHL team and NHL team in the offseason, then awesome! I mean they have all that land behind the AUD to build a practice facility for the actual Rangers and such. Sometimes you people need to be creative in your arguments. Think of Dodger town....they could create Ranger town here.

Either you are twelve yrs old, or, your memory has failed you concerning the past performances of pro hockey in the county.

A second ice surface is part of the new plans. I have followed every pro hockey team in the area since around 1970. They have all failed somehow in the end. I still will be excited to see someone try again. This ownership group has a lot of money and has done similar things in similar cities. I understand the skepticism due to the above mentioned failures. What I don't understand is the people that are angry that an outside group wants to put money into our area and try to do something.
