PROFESSIONAL Hockey

In response to the news story on WKTV about Rome getting a "pro" hockey team.....yeah thats not professional. By now we all know baseball will never return to Utica without an agreement to build a new facility. Hockey though can return in the form of the AA ECHL. I just found out that the Elmira Jackals are now affliated with Binghamton and the Syracuse Crunch have to share an affliation with the Chicago Wolves.
WHY CANT UTICA GET AN ECHL HOCKEY TEAM AND BE THE AA AFFLIATE FOR SYRACUSE???? Syracuse doesn't have their solely own affliate and this would be a great connection. What do you think? They have to pull players from Gwinnett County, GEORGIA!!!!! You could maybe even get the Syracuse management to partner in on this new team since travels costs would be cut down enormously.

We just have to settle for this low talent level crap they call "college" hockey. Litterly left over players that coudn't make Colgate, Michigan St, Boston U, Maine, etc.

ROME GETTING A TEAM?? They have a garbage arena that only seats about 800.

I really enjoy hockey but come on. Have the people responsible for this new league been walking around with blinders on? Hasn't this already been attempted locally, at least twice in the past ten years? In both instances, the local teams ended up consisting of a bunch of locals who could be watched for free in one of our area bar leagues or pickup skates. Just like before, who is actually going to pay to watch this?

I applaud any attempts to bring in new business but have a difficult time seeing how this league and local team will survive; especially since the model and arrangements are very similar to both previous failed attempts.

Look I will convince whoever wants to hear me that this is not professional hockey. No way, no how. You can't label something professional if they aren't going to excel in it. ECHL is the way to go and I want to push for it.

Utica buried itself. we had the AHL here with an arena that was less than 4000 seats. that place should have been sold out EVERY GAME - about 1 or 2 sellouts per year. the people in Utica are too cheap to support good hockey. Utica college hockey leads the league in attendance because it's 5.00
These guys know that Utica can't draw attendance

Hmmm..let see Why can't Utica get an ECHL team...because when Pat Kelly was the ECHL Commissioner, he stated right in Hockey News that as long as he had anything to do with it there would never be an ECHL team in Utica...talk about bitter..

What would work here is a good Jr hockey program much like Syracuse. Now these kids are hungry, want to win and are very good. Competition is tremendous at this level. But at the Aud, too bad the stale fried dough and old popcorn cost more than the ticket to get in. Then get stripped searched in case you might have a candy bar under your shirt.

Really? Thats pathetic. Sometimes the old men need to step aside. This guy is going to be 75 years old. Maybe once he is dead, Utica will have an ECHL franchise.

This area is not a hockey area. Yes we have good High School Hockey Thanks to New Hartford and Clinton from a few years ago. College Hockey UC thats a joke that coach couldn't buy a win lifetime coaching record 100 wins almost 100 loses boy hes great. Div 3 Hockey Players are not good enough to compete at Div 1 or 2 and they can't play High School anymore so you Div 3 You get the same with the coaches some do move up or unless you coach a UC they all move up except the UC coach he is the bar from good to worst enough with that waste of program.

We had AHL the community did not support 1 step below NHL. 200 true Hockey fans will not pay the bills.

Good luck Rome on your pro hockey adventure. I hope you sell beer if not well thats about 40% of your money. Get your ice money up front because all the organizations that are paying you now that you are going to kick aside. You are headed for big loses I hope that don't happen your arena can't afford that lose.

Actually Kennedy Arena has done tons of improvements. I was there last year and it is a far cry from what it used to be.

Was in Rome over the weekend. All they did was add new locker rooms. The bleachers are practically the same only now they are made of metal. Ohh and the put benches in the lobby. Not very impressive. And still the coldest rink in the area.

Rome is not set up for pro hockey The Mayor, and City offical need to get a grip. Its more then selling a few tickets its alot of work that why pro teams can't make it and not enough Advertising Dollars to help team survive. Mr. Mayor you want to put the city on the map market what you and don't spend what you don't have
