1 DAY NOTICE AUCTION NETS CITY $76,500.00 and MANY QUESTION THE NOTICE GIVEN THE PUBLIC

There are 40 comments on the story from Dec 30, 2009, titled 1 DAY NOTICE AUCTION NETS CITY $76,500.00 and MANY QUESTION THE NOTICE GIVEN THE PUBLIC. In it, reports that:

UTICA — Bajro Smajic walked away with a two-story home on Burrstone Road for $13,500 Tuesday night. He got another property down the street for $17,000. The homes were two of seven seized properties that sold in the city’s first property auction since the administration of former Mayor Edward Hanna. The city made $76,500 in the action. Nine properties — five homes and four lots — were offered up after they were seized for back taxes. The winning bids were: * Mummery Street lot, $500 to Philip Cavaretta * Tryon Road lot, $1,000 to Rodger Padula * 1895 Merriline Ave., $7,500 to Alexander Sen * 1119 Kellogg Ave., $17,000 to Russell Rodin * 1327 Butternut Ave., $20,000 to Sergey Kvachev * 1432 Burrstone Road, $13,500 to Smajic * 1413 Burrstone Road, $17,000 to Smajic The homes range in assessment from $43,000 to $52,300. The properties are outside of the city’s Urban Renewal zone so they could not be sold by the city Urban Renewal Agency but could be auctioned off. Councilman James Zecca, D-2, called the auction a complete success. “This is really going to benefit the neighborhoods,” he said. “It will be good to have families living there and properties back on the tax role.” Zecca said the bids have to be accepted by the Common Council before they are finalized. That is expected to occur next week. Copyright 2009 The Observer-Dispatch. Some rights reserved

We were discussing the notice given at dinner yesterday. Exactly how do you expect to get "top dollar" when you don't let the public know in advance. Seems the only ones who knew were those who are friends/family of people who know people in codes/city hall.

There are many in the area who would have been happy to bid given more advance notice. How many folks have 20% at Christmas time to put down (unless they knew way in advance?)

I am not going to point out the last name of the person who bought the two Burrstone Road houses (I guess his name would be equivalent to Smith back home?)but I wonder if he is related to the codes official in Utica? I would think those looking for a fair shake in buying home would be ticked off.

These properties were advertised as going up for auction sometime ago. I read about them in the paper, so there was plenty of notice.

hopefully the Common Council it does not except the low bids with respect because it does say the bids have to be accepted and the city does it again sometime in the spring with open house so people could see the homes. in the news it says quote from utica od ""Buyers will also need to deposit 20 percent of the bid in cash or money order at the time of the auction. """"" "20% of what $100.000 1,000,000 what is the 20% of what bid its an auction no one bid yet to know how much to deposit people don't carry cash all the time and the banks don't have the cash handy you have to give days notice for big withdraws

Julie - there wasn't "plenty" of notice. You have to do things legally - there are lots of notices in the paper but there was no notice listing these houses with dates/times of auction and pertinent detials i.e. 20% down on day of auction.

Again, if city wants to get the most money, they have to make sure people are informed. As it was, one person bought both houses on Burrstone Rd. Will he be the newest "slumlord?" He had the "inside track" on this.

Bill Newell, you are prejudice against Bosnians, that's obvious. Remember the comments you made during the recall campaign?? These houses will be fixed up and back on the tax roll. You should be happy somebody wants to purchase them and fix them up. You seriously need a life! You think you are a journalist, get a real job and stop bashing the city of Utica every chance you get. If you don't like it here, GET OUT, move somewhere else. Stop your complaining! I am sure there is another city that needs another do-nothing blown hard complainer full of bluster. Bill Newell, you are truly a pinhead.

Adovic.....I am sure there would have been more folks who would have liked to buy those houses.......maybe bid higher too. This has nothing to do with Bosnians......who is Bosnian anyway? This has to do with not enough notice and/or information on the properties so that others could have looked the houses over and made bids. Fairness......that is what it is about.

"Zecca said the bids have to be accepted by the Common Council before they are finalized. That is expected to occur next week."

So why are there For Sale signs on some of these houses??

My brother would have loved to buy some of that property. He checks the Sunday paper every week never saw it.

Now Bosnians are using the race card, this is a sick world. If there was not enough notice and there are shenanigans the DA should get involved. And if Bosnians are involved they should be deported.

Legal notices were published in advance of the sale as required. Just because you didn't read them doesn't mean there are 'shenanigans' going on.

"He checks the Sunday paper every week and never saw it"??? Seriously??? Someone should clue him in to the fact that there are six other days in the week. Last I checked, the OD hasn't become a weekly newspaper.
