The audacity of these people! This is great because it's an early indication that the Unions up here are retards and are about to learn the hard way what private sector unions did when the warehousing and manufacturing moved out of downstate in 5 years because of their ways.

Unions filing grievance after mayor asks them to take their own cars home at night to save city funds

UTICA, N.Y.(WKTV)- In an effort to cut money anywhere possible, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri is asking the city police and fire departments to ground take-home cars for anyone below the rank of chief, assistant chief and deputy chief.

Utica PBA President Dominick Nitti says the police department union is filling a grievance over this issue, and that such grievances in the past have most often been resolved in favor of the union, not the city or municipality.

The mayor says the move wouldn't save millions, but it would save something and more importantly, it would show bond-rating agencies and city taxpayers that the city is doing everything possible to save money everywhere possible.

"It's a token of trying to make this work, so I'm a little bit appalled knowing the PBA would do this at this time knowing the financial disarray that we're into," says Palmieri.

At issue are four captains' cars at the Utica Police Department. What Palmieri wants is for those officers to get into their own cars to go home every night, then use the city car during their work day after they drive to work in their own cars.

He says the on-call captain would be allowed to take home a city car. Palmieri says three city hall vehicles have been similarly grounded. His is not one of them; Palmieri still takes home a city car.

A call to the president of the Utica Fire Department Union has not yet been returned.

WHO are the Captains? If they're going to contest credit cards and cars people should know WHO they are and where they're driving exactly. Token is the right word mayor. This is nothing why are these people even working there anyway what are they doing for utica lately?

the mayor still propecting his pals all cars should be taken away ; why should the city pay for brooks, esposito, beck;williams, toomey, bailey to drive around ewhen last check all make over 100,000 in pay the cowards on common council should get rid of them first ;then other non important police and fire items instead of laying off cops and firemen.

I work in the private sector and I have not gotten a raise in three years. I do not get reimbursed for mileage for my commute (30 miles each way), and I certainly don't get a free take-home car. I personally don't understand why public employees and their unions cry bloody foul every time you ask them to contribute a little bit more. They think they're being raped if you ask them to pay 5 percent to their already free healthcare and pensions.

It's time to face reality, people! The city of Utica is underwater and cannot pay its bills. Which would you rather lose: your take-home car or your job? It's that simple!

Again, I see the news report on a subject and make it sound as if all unions are involved. Why didn't they investigate and call the the fire chief, not the the union president. The UFD Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief are the only ones with take home cars. The on duty Deputy may take his car home to eat lunch or dinner because he has to be mobil. Not even the Fire Marshel takes one home. This is all UPD, a budget that is 6 million dollars greater than the Fire budget. You can thank our inept past commissioner and his buddy the mayor/undertaker. UPD was givin anything and everything they requested. Look at cities the same size or greater and you will find that they employ 50 to 80 less officers. If Nitti need to grieve, he should go to the Rofero/ Scala funeral home . He can cry on Roforo's shoulder. The people are going to be held hostage by the cops, because everything they have is backed by union contract.

Capt. Potatoe Head needs a take home car so he will be on time for his do nothing job. That's right, the present administration stripped him of all responsibilities and he makes over 90 K a year to sit all day and do nothing.

Its a start but won't save any real money. The Mayor already said its a "token" gesture, to keep from making real cuts.

Better idea, lay off all four useless captains on the UPD. Takes care of the take home car problem and saves the taxpayers the cost of those four salaries in the process. They are just one more administrative layer that is not needed nor required.

look it needs to start at the top. all chiefs captians and on down all need to give up alittle. these groups have been protecting the streets of utica i get that. still dont get why a death in front of the james st. station is still unsolved?? anyway start at the top mayor and everybody needs to give just 10mins. a day just 10 mins. up back to the city and take home cars and caredit cards for free meals. look these are tuff times and if you dont get smart about this now the state will walk in and tell you all what to do.

The Union HAS to file the grievance or they get in trouble for failure to represent. If a member asks, they have to file...end of story. Nitti appears to be the messenger. However,I think we all agree...ALL takehome cars should be abolished. If there is an emergency, they can drive to the station, and pick it up.

And don't forget mayor himself, he still gets to drive city car home.

Perhaps if the all lived IN the City of Utica like the residency requirement has stated for decades now, they would not need take home cars.

State control board

This is exactly why we need a State-imposed control board or even better bankruptcy. This would null and void all contracts and then we can start fresh and rid the padded and un-negotiated contract where spenda faro gave away the kitchen sink and threw out the baby with the bath water. It would also be better offf for the taxpayers and guarantee lower taxes. Let's get the ball rolling and stop these blood suckers there due and will see whats fair once and for all.

and if i did forget unions are blood suckers. they take your hard earned dollars and spend it on themselves.with all the laws in-place there is no need for unions. inaddition it would keep the lazy shit heads that work for this fear city to stop being lazy and maybe we could get a pot hole fixed.

The city should do an audit on the mileage and gas use of each and every city owned take home car. If they did their homework they would find that these cars being used back and forth to work each day adds more miles to each car then the mileage they use on official business. If the city seriously wants to take the cars back, make the information public so the taxpayers can see the results. Hopefully this might embarrass these city employees and if they have a conscience or real care of the city they work for's future, may give up their take home cars freely.

Well you think that is bad how about this one. NYS police investigators all get to take a car home. Our state is in a financial crisis so why dont they have to pay for gas and wear and tear on their vehicle like everyone else. I can see where there should be a car for the top senior investigator and maybe one for the individual that is on call to share but besides that it is nonsense. I do understand the person on call may need to have one but even the ones that would not need to go out on emergencies have one. Where is the governor on this one?????
