Ny State Troopers start out at $50,374.00 and average $74,700. Gov. Patterson is giving them a 3% raise for 1st three years of the 4 year contract and 4% raise in the last year, a 13.64% raise over four years. Are the troopers in this area deserving of this major pay raise? Do they earn this kind of money? The oneida County Sheriff's patrol starting salary for 2006 is $34,638.00 with a maximum salary for a senior Deputy is $46,545.00. You be the judge.

I wonder how many Troopers NY has and what the pay would be for the whole state?

How lame you all are.
Go take the Trooper test if you have an issue.
Why shouldnt they get what they bargin for during the contract negotiation.
This is the same percentages that other state workers have recieved.

most are great guys...I think all cops should be like 007, shoot first ask questions later.

Bottom line, you dont have to be a rocket scientist to be a state trooper, all you need is an associates degree in any field alot of luck and it helps to know someone. I would like to see every state trooper do the beat in Utica for a while just so they know what it's like to be a real police officer. Without a doubt the Utica cops have the hardest job of all. Hats off to them.

Approximately 3600 sworn troopers will receive a 13.64% pay raise (estimated 45 million)in the 4 year contract.

I agree with you. Also for the amount of money they earn we need to up the standards. They should have at least a bachelors degree in criminal justice. An Associate degree of any kind does not cut it.

The State Police have a much higher caliber of Law Enforcement Officers than UPD or the Sheriff Dept. They are very courteous, well mannered, and do NOT play "favorites" all because the guilty party "knows" someone "important". IMO - they deserve ALL pay raises; the more the better.

Tony, you're absolutely correct!

The NY State Constitution...which is still in effect the last time I checked says that the NYSP serve to protect the executive office of the state of NY...that's all.

The sheriffs have always been the chief law enforcement officers in every state.

Those who state that troopers only require an associate degree are completely incorrect. They are required to hold 60 college credit hours, which is the equivalent of a bachelors degree. Be more informed before you put out incorrect information.

They do not need a bachelors degree in fact when they went on there hiring spree last year..... some didnt even have an associates. Further more High caliber your a## some of the women they hired were pushed through the physical piece of the test.... so hardly the elite.

Depending on what type of college you choose to go to, it is roughly 60 credits. You must also take the recommended courses by the institution to complete the associates. For example an associates in Psychology ,these credits would need to apply to psychology ( abnormal psychology, human growth and development and so forth. You cannot just take 60 credits of classes to get an associates degree.

Most states recognize 60 semester hours as enough hours to issue an associate degree. For a Bachelors degree depending on the program is roughly 120-128 semester hours designed as a 4 year program.

I'm sensing some jealousy out there. Maybe couldn't pass the physical fitness test or were dq'd in the interview. The NYSP has incredibly high standards.

I fully understand about the high standards we have, but you have to admit that a few have squeezed though the cracks and in no way shape of form belong in the uniform. Point in question the younger super Trooper brother who can do no wrong stationed in Marcy. Forgot his name. Italian guy / steroid man.

He was prolly the guy in uniform talking about his sexual prowess at Venice pizzeria last year.I should have been a cop instead of a firefighter cuz I don't miss a thing traveling down the road. Only one problem: I have a really difficult time being a dick and I think that is part of being a good cop.
