TOO DAMNED MANY!!! The reason: NY is a "blue" state with corrupt politicians who have raised taxes so high, along with local, county, town, etc. for those pigs who continually feed at the public trough! According to the OD a few years ago, almost 70% of people work for a taxpayer funded entity, gov't, schools, etc...so the rest of us suckers are forced to pay higher and higher property taxes, income taxes,...taxes, taxes, taxes to keep this obvious racket called government livin' large! They are too chickenshit or being greased to do anything about it...they profit! Simple: just raise taxes or you will lose your home as you can't pay for your taxes or mortgage as you have to insure that all these public workers get raises, golden guaranteed pensions, early retirements, double dipping, pension padding, spiking, the best healthcare around (their unions have already struck a deal with Obama to get a 'waiver' as they don't want their members to have to pay the soon to be mandated tax on "Cadillac" healthcare which these employees enjoy!...how convenient! Heaven forbid they should have to pay for much of anything....let the rest of us do it while we watch our 401k's dwindle, our salaries stagnate and jobs lost! But, that's fair to all new Yorkers/Americans, right?

Just watch Congress try to, once again, screw the private sector by 'fixing' Social Security (which is what most private sector employees rely on now for retirement, also the result of small private business not able to afford higher and higher taxes, so no more pensions!) How about raising the retirement age for government/public workers? How about reducing the public workforce (most of which are redundant or unnecessary)? How about making them pay for more of their healthcare and pension costs? How about the Fed's finding out where that 'missing'$1.3 million dollars went at the Pentagon? The tip of the friggin' iceberg, folks!

Just think, the more government workers are hired, maybe everyone will be able to work for the public sector. Wrong! If that were to become the case, all public workers' property/income tax would just about equal their salaries...think about it! They know exactly how many private sector (especially from NY City financial sector) taxpayers there are and how many they need to continue this scam on private sector Americans.

Government and all taxpayer funded organizations are the only ones who never suffer during a recession for God's sake! Wake up! Any newbie officials or workers for public sector soon see just what a piece of cake their jobs are and what a comfortable life they will live off the taxpayer, and jobs for life and no accountability or payment of consequences for wrongdoing or outright incompetence to boot! Good gig, but an obviously unfair one! If they can then look themselves in the mirror, I don't know how, but they also know very well that this BS is nothing but a big racket, as is 'education' and that anything they want, they will force out of the rest of us. Why is it the more dollars we put into 'education,' the dumber our kids turn out?

And, don't listen to the ones who say, "but public sector workers pay taxes, too!" Yeah, they do, but their raises and everything else they can extort from the taxpayer more than makes up for any tax increases! Okay, sorry for long post, I'm so sick and tired of this extortion!

AGAIN, LIKE MANY PLACES IN THE ENTIRE UTICA AREA,AMERICA AND OTHER COUNTRIES, TOO MUCH INDUSTRY AND PRIVATE BUSINESS HAS EITHER MOVED OUT OF NEW YORK AND OUT OF AMERICA WHILE THE PUBLIC SECTOR IS EVER-EXPANDING!
Time for change

Excellent post! Until citizens wake up and toss out the corrupt leaders (that would be all of them), the area will never recover.
