Why does the Utica Taxpayer and Utica School District have to financially support charter schools? It seems like these are private schools like Notre Dame is and if you choose to send your child to a charter school you should pay tuition.

That's what makes it a charter school and not a private school.

Yes, you are very confused. Charter Schools are PUBLIC schools but they are not governed by the local school board. They are approved by the state education department in an area where the local schools are failing the students, as the Utica District has for years. They offer the kids an alternative to the inadequacy, corruption, and patronage so prevalent in the UCSD and its board. The kids are supported by the same tax money that would have supported them if they went to the city schools. That money is then deducted from the city schools since those kids no longer attend there. There is no increase in tax money paid--it is the same, but it is redistributed according to what school the kids go to. If you don't understand this, then go read about it online. Just don't think Charter schools are private--they are PUBLIC--and they are instituted because the local schools have a long history of failing to do its job.

No. I think Charter school students are chosen by lottery. You apply and so many students get picked.

Correct, its the luck of the draw. They are public schools too. ND is strictly private and folding soon. Thanks Vinny G.

That's what will make the charter school more desirable. Students that actually care about grades. And teachers that care about students. If you can't perform academically the you should not take up space. If profit is made if a good trade off.

if you are implying that teachers in public school dont care about their students you are shamefully wrong and should have the class to say youre sorry

Your implying charter is in it for profit only. I have no problem with UCSD teachers. That's where my child will be going.

charter schools ARE in it for profit ..thats a FACT ..as soon as they start to lose money..the close ..they have to maintain a certain level of grades on tests or they lose the state money ..thus ..any student having trouble with test scores or grades is thrown out ...these are FACTS ...in public schools we have to deal with ALL problems we cant dismiss students who are having trouble THATS why we teach ..we teach all . we dont abandon students or the community when things are going badly ...even as we are being bashed by the very people we are trying to help
