A reputable census statistian for the northeast has told me in confidence that they project a population for Utica at 43000 st best. I told her that I would guess around 39000 at best. Oneida county loss will not be as bad probally 1% from the 2000 census. They make these projections by their mailing quotas to the registered addresses in Utica for their residents. If this is accurate it will be hard to justify present numbers for public safety and school district employees. Many people are going to throw the census questionaire out in the garbage because they are so fed up with local governments.

If your speculation is correct I believe that will take Utica under the 50,000 population threshold for second class cities.

Sadly, Utica won't even be second rate anymore.

I had always thought that the "second class city" designation wasn't affected by population size. Where's the statute on that, Gear?

Utica a second class city?
That's funny!! Utica couldn't qualify as a third class city let alone a second. Too many retards.

I'm guessing in the lows 30k's and heading down.
Next census after this one, Utica will be in the Herkimer range and truly relegated to its place on the trashheap its earned over the decades.
Couldn'happen to a better little shitheap. Chipfab? NYS Data Center? Yeah, right....Wait until the OD and WKTV inevitably fold.
Mentioned elsewhere, high speed rail might slow down in Utica to offload the train's human waste.
whatever

If the population is in fact declining then how do you explain the school district bursting at the seams? I think the schools have around 10000 students. These numbers are about the same as they were in the 80's. If the population is in fact dropping to 43000 where did all of the students come from? Are senior citizens all of a sudden having children again?

Don't worry. The refugees pumped in will make up the difference.
