The Balkan is NOT expensive at all--most meals are under $20--around $12.95. The Hadley is more pricey (Balkan and Hadley are two parts of one restaurant)--I've been three times--excellent meals each time.

Good sandwiches. Used to have a really good breakfast on the weekends but don't think they do that anymore. It's on Genesee St. next to the Uptown. Haven't tried Hadley yet. What's the bar next to Hadley? That's pretty new, right?

I like Hadley's, but the Balkin needs to offer better beer and more authentic German food. Miesterbrau IS NOT a good German beer!

Balkan is a great deal for the money; Weihenstephaner is real German beer, I'd like to see that out at finer establishments. The only way I could see people not liking the place is if your idea of a good meal is the Outback Steakhouse or Uno Pizzeria, or, you're a competing establishment. The price for the quality is spot on.

It needs German music, GOOD German beer (Spatan, Worstiner, Bitburger) and Real German food in large portions. Mustard being very important to German food, meals should be serverd with at least six seperate types. Also, German liquiors like Bearenjegger and Underberg should be featured specials. Bearenjegger is made from pure honey and Underberg is a good after dinner curitive.

As for the outback steakhouse, I like it too. But if your're going for "German", you should do it right or just expand Hadley's. Now Hadley's is a wonderful place, but it could be bigger. I enjoied the piano music, decore and the excellent food. The service was a little slow (we went on a busy Friday), but very friendly and professional.

Two French onion soups, two meals, drinks and a 20% tip came to $70.

Well the reviews so far sound quite positive. Sounds as if your friend has a motive against them. First why wouldn't he have supported one of his customers ? And i'm sure he made sure they were told, how his company could save them.

But the positive comments will help you see me there...

This slop doesn't compare to Burrito Jonz 732-BONG. Why waste your money and eat this crap, when you can Jonz it up at the best place in Utica. Atmosphere, delicious food, the best actually, I live there. Balkan=slopshop and is for posers.
happy to be there

Well, I went to the Balkan for the first time tonight and I honestly can't remember the last time I had a meal that good from start to finish. Great beer variety, interesting menu choices, awesome bread, reasonably priced, unique atmosphere, friendly and attentive wait staff, and just great quality food offerings from the appetizer through dessert.

What a gem and we will be back often. Please keep up the good work!

thats why we live in america we are allowed choices and opinions. everyones tastes and likes/dislikes matter. reviews good or bad are for each individual to decide. haven't tried the place yet but want to soon.

OK, I was just at the Balkan and i must say that although the food was OK it was not consistent with the other times I've been there. My main motivation for posting is the service, by far the worst of upper echelone restaurants in town. I'm not against queers but that place is a goddamn henhouse with all the homos flirting with each other.
Obviously boyd bissel hires with his weenis because every waiter there is a flamer. I hate it
