Well since the info wasn't supposed to leak do you really expect them to answer questions about a "delay"?

If the plan is to use taxpayer money for any of this then yes, I do expect an answer. I not only expect it but I (we the taxpayers) deserve it. It's our money.

It's not over until the NYS budget is passed and we can be certain that no taxpayer money has been allocated for this scheme. That's when it is either over or, the fight just begins against those stupid enough to propose and vote for such a thing.

If you don't like the conversation then don't click the link. Move on to more intelligent banter like "Would you rather be Bosnian or Black?"

You're right - we shouldn't want "something" to do in our city - we should vote to continue to be that small and lonely city that is just a nothing to NYS.

Movies are a much broader market than hockey and the cost for a family of four is half of what it would cost to go to a hockey game. For the sake of argument where are all these new bars and restaurants going to pop up? It's a fallacy. Chains have demographic requirements that need to be met to even consider a market. New Hartford has the strongest demographics and that's why it's where new businesses populate. A hockey team isn't going to change the demographics.
Quit trying to compare apples to oranges. The Flames would never survive here on their own dime, won't survive even with tax payers dollars thus a bad deal for local and state taxpayers. And I don't think taxpayers wrote a check for the theaters or stores in the Orchard. Tax breaks probably & that's too much. Government & taxpayer dollars don't belong in business.
If the Flames could stand on their own I'd be in full support and go to games. I don't think the Flames could realistically average 1500 fans a night.

You miss the point completely. We should do something. We should change our mindset and rather than seeing government as the solution we should see government for the probelem it is.

What I want is a business friendly atmosphere where businesses want to locate. We get that by lowering taxes, upgrading infrastructure and by stopping forced unionism.

We don't get business friendly environment:
-by taking taxpayer money and subsidizing hockey teams
-by taxpayers paying to renovate the Stanley
-by taxpayers paying to refurbish Union Station
-by taxpayers financing Hotel Utica
-by taxpayers paying for the Harza/City Center building
-by giving taxpayer supplied tax breaks to companies that don't stay
-by all of the other broken promises we've been forced to pay for

When you ceate a business friendly environmment businesses want to come. When businesses come they bring jobs. Jobs put money in people's pockets. When people have more money in their pockets they create demand for entertainment. Businesses, like hockey teams, then come in on their own dime to fill that void with the chance of making a profit. Thse are the business that will stay too. Unlike the businesses who come in and only stay until the "public teat" runs dry. We have a long history of those. It's called free market capitalism and it doesn't happen when the government takes from some and redistributes to fulfill the dreams of others.

Your comment is also off base in that it pre-supposes that a hockey team will appeal to and be a good thing for all of the people of the region. Not even close. Taken in relative terms, hockey fans that will buy tickets are a very small minority of the population. If that minority wants hockey let them pay for hockey. I'm all for that. Let it survive or not on its' own.

You do realize that if Utica ever grew these same people that complain all of the time would then be complaining how the city is getting bigger. They are the same kind of people who would complain they won a 50 million dollar lottery instead of a 100 million dollar one.

Not true.

People complain and are skeptical because they've been taken advantage of so many times. All of the broken promises, half truths and downright lies from the people who we elect supposedly to protect our interests are what gives many in our area a less than pleasant attitude. It cetainly isn't because they don't want the region to grow and prosper. Who wouldn't? Funding things like this latest scheme with the hockey team is just another example, in a long line of examples, of exactly what I'm talking about.
