Quality of life comes with money. Money comes from jobs. Programs like subsidies for private enterprise takes money out of the pockets of taxpayers lessening the quality of life.

Business' get government support all of the time whether directly of indirectly? AHL hockey is nothing more or less than another business providing a service.

So let's just not get the team, not get the renovations, not get the new parking lot(s), not get the new bars, restaurants and other things surrounding the Aud - Awesome, sounds good.

Let's just say NO to all that and continue, year-after-year, being Albany & Syracuse's in-between garbage can!

You don't really think all those things are coming do you? No business in their right mind would build around a team that's destined to fail and at best a seasonal draw. People are desperate and grasping at straws here. More than 25% of the city is in poverty with a growing percentage being regugees & immigrants. How many Somali Bantu do you see sporting a Flames jersey. Beyond the city almost HALF of the county is on some form of social services. That doesn't translate into disposable income. Where are you going to draw from? Herkimer? Anybody 15 minutes west is going to Syracuse. Markets are too overlapping. Despite what the Crunch owner stated publicly there's no way he want a team tapping into his market.

I guess everything should just shut down then right? I mean close the movie theaters at the orchard (even though they usually do pretty well) since there's no disposable income in Utica. Shut down the bars and restaurants too. Since there's no disposable income everyone should be forced to eat at home and save money.

No, and I'll explain so even you can understand. Prioritize your spending. Needs first, then wants.

And what the area needs is more business. The new AHL team is nothing other than that.

Movies are a much broader market than hockey and the cost for a family of four is half of what it would cost to go to a hockey game. For the sake of argument where are all these new bars and restaurants going to pop up? It's a fallacy. Chains have demographic requirements that need to be met to even consider a market. New Hartford has the strongest demographics and that's why it's where new businesses populate. A hockey team isn't going to change the demographics.

Quit trying to compare apples to oranges. The Flames would never survive here on their own dime, won't survive even with tax payers dollars thus a bad deal for local and state taxpayers. And I don't think taxpayers wrote a check for the theaters or stores in the Orchard. Tax breaks probably & that's too much. Government & taxpayer dollars don't belong in business.

If the Flames could stand on their own I'd be in full support and go to games. I don't think the Flames could realistically average 1500 fans a night.

You are so sadly mistaken. Hockey is a frill which reaches the smallest fringe of our community. Fine for a private investment, however. Tax money expenditure, not on your life.

SOME businesses get taxpayer help/support, not all. The other aspect of this is magnatude. From what I've read we are talikng about multiple millions of taxpayer dollars for the Aud upgrades necessary for an AHL affiliate. The video scoreboard, the luxury boxes, additional seating....... That goes far beyond what most businesses could reasonably expect and have been given in the past.

Let's look at the Stanley Theater backstage renovation and addition. Millions of taxpayer dollars were given to this private business that serves a very small percentage of the local population with the promise that it would lead to a resurgance of downtown and the region. We now know that attendance is 40%+ below initial estimates, they lost money and they are no longer booking thier own shows. How is this different?

If a private business has a solid business plan then private venture capital should be used to fund it. How many times do the taxpayers have to be hoodwinked before this kind of thing stops?
