ROME, N.Y.(WKTV)- The West Rome Drive- In movie theater has closed its gates for good.

The news was given on Thursday night.

The theater which has been around for decades was the center of a heated debate back in 2011 about whether or not to stay open. Davidson Auto Group, who owns the property chose not to close due to the public's concern. They promised to keep it open, until now.

According to The Davidson Auto Group, they are not opening for the summer due to a poor attendance and changing technology.

The car dealership released a statement saying, "Movie distributors will no longer provide first run 35mm film to theaters like the one in Rome. The decline in attendance and the cost of the digital age has finally hit the west Rome drive-in making it unrealistic to continue operation."

The news of the closure has the community upset.

Mark Lubeck of Rome said, "it's getting to the point where there is nothing here anymore. I think it's a sad day."

While Davidson owns the property, Zurich Cinemas corporation managed the movie theater for the past few years.

This is a Bummer for sure. Davidson promised Rome it would stay open! He ran it for a whole three months!! Can't they at least lease it out to someone who has an interest???? Many families are very upset. Just as the weather is getting nicer they close it!!!!! BUMMER!

They've been closed all winter. They're just not reopening. Duh. Put a flat screen out on your porch, drive your car up & pretend you're at the drive-in. How's that?

People in that region are so ignorant to embrace change. Let's see...the cinema movie industry is dying...that's a fact...drive in cinemas were dead 30 years ago...but yet they still bit ch about it.

Here's the reality...no one goes to drive in theaters. If you think it's so great go ahead all you whiners and buy it from the owner. I'm sure he'd be glad to dump it in your lap.

Unfortunately these are also people who think a fake fort is a great centerpiece for a city.

Where were Joe Griffo and Anthony Brindisi with tax junk and help with a new projector for "Movie Friendly New York"?

Around the country a surprising number of Drive-ins are still doing good as nostalgia shows with current movies. They aren't thriving but some are hanging on and doing well. What kind of "high tech" region would let this happen over a loan on an 80K projector? Where's the grants and taxpayer handouts for those people?

Or better yet wheres the super duper private investors to keep such an institution open?

Very true. You can't have one city hogging all of the available tourism dollars to be spent.

Missing is any common sense: No one want to see it close, but then again, not many bother going, and the new tech is costly. The reason the Uptown no longer does movies, and the reason the Strand in Old Forge is on a fund raiser.
If more went out to patronize it, they may have stayed open.

That joint was great. I went up there with all sorts of broads and had some good times. And I remember back in the '90's they'd have "Porno Tuesdays" when they'd show a hot XXX double feature. Those would really get my dates worked up. Good times!!!
