A local announcement on Friday makes sense with the league voting on the Canucks request to locate their farm team in Utica on Thursday.

While the quality of ice hockey will be at a very high level, who in the Utica area can afford ticket prices? It's costly. I hope it works out, I truly do, but it's gonna be tough, in this economy, for an area like Utica-Rome to support an AHL team.
The team will be just fine.

But will the PEOPLE who are expected to go to the games in support of the TEAM be fine?
THAT'S the question.
Seems like a LOT of wishful thinking and not a lot of market analysis...
Anyway, I hope it works. But don't be surprised if there's only a few hundred people going to the games by January/February of 2014.
Few hundred? You severely underestimate.

I have to agree with your thought but disagree on the number. They'll start with sellouts and the number will drop to between 2200 and 2500 I'm guessing. I think that there will be an initial burst of enthusiasm and games will sell out. Then as the season wears on attendance will dwindle and business sponsorship will as well. I think the number of hard core hockey fans willing to pay the price of admission long term is a lot smaller than it was in the early 90's when the Devils were here. Back then sellouts were rare even with more fans.

The real result won't be seen until the second season when the novelty wears off and a whole new team(all new players) is substituted. That's because this is a place holder for Vancouver. They want to play at Abbotsford and just couldn't make the deal given the deadline. This gives them a year to get the Flames out so they can move in. That leaves the Flames without a home. Will they come here if the Canucks have a less than stellar year?????

This scheme has doom written all over it. In the end a few people will benefit financially and the taxpayers will once again be left holding the bag. Think Hotel Utica.

At least your predictions aren't as doom and gloom as some people on here. I think you are absolutely correct in predicting that they will pack the place initially as people will want to come and see what it is all about followed by a decline in attendance. That is typical for any new business especially in the food and entertainment industries.

The onus will be on Rob Esche and his group to market the team hard enough to keep people coming back after the "newness" wears off.

I know the Mohawk Valley isn't exactly an economic boom town right now but let's not kid ourselves it wasn't in the late 80's and early 90's when the Devils were in town either. Back then the constant excuse for people not attending games was that people didn't want to park their cars near the Aud because of the neighborhood with the low income housing projects right behind the Aud. Well those don't exist anymore so the fears of having your car broke into or worse should not be a concern.

If the local investors do a great of marketing this team to the entire Utica, Rome and Mohawk Valley area and they can keep their costs low this team can be successful for many seasons.

The population and tax base are much different than they were in the late 80's, early 90's and not in a good way. More of the population is dependant on government(taxpayer) assistance. If not for the influx of immigrants, Utica's population would be much lower than it was during that period. I'm not saying that the immigrants won't be hockey fans but realistically, how many do you suppose will be able to afford the price of admission? The entire Mohawk Valley was the fanbase for the Devils and they didn't fill the building on a regualr basis even when they were contending for playoff spots.
