Federal reps begin fight for DFAS

The area's three federal representatives have written a letter to U.S. Army Secretary John McHugh to advocate for Rome's Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
News emerged Tuesday that at least two Army studies had proposed the possibility of reducing the Army's reliance on DFAS, the military accounting service created by the Defense Department in 1991.
The Rome DFAs Branch employs almost 1,000 people.
"Let us be clear," U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kiresten Gillibrant, and U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna wrote in a letter late Tuesday. "We strongly oppose any effort to transfer or reduce DFAS jobs in Rome, New York, where these productive and efficient workers are doing an exemplary job."
The federal officials also expressed disappointment that they had not been notified of the analysis sooner. Information about the proposals was still sketchy Wednesday.
Schumer, Gillibrand and Hanna said they are "eager to receive more thorough and timely explanations of any nascent proposal — and to have ample opportunity to influence this process."
The proposals appear to outline a plan that would bring the Army's accounting services in house.

But Rome has a fake fort and an international airport.
