I have heard good and bad things about that place but I don't know for myself.

We got our dog from there and the staff was absolutely wonderful. They let us take him before he was neutered because they couldn't get him in for another week. They called a couple of times a week for the first few weeks to make sure everything was going ok with him too. Better than the attitude I got from the workers in Utica and Herkimer. I would highly recommend going there.

Thanks for the advise. We would like to adopt one from a shelter but weren't sure of which place to adopt from. Are the animals from there checked out medically before they are allowed to be adopted out to make sure they are healthy? Or is that something you have to do afterwards on your own? Thanks!

They'll neuter them and give them a quick check over. But like all shelters they encourage you to bring them to your own vet within a month to get a thorough checkup.

The building is in need of work but the people are very nice to us humans and also the pets. They really want to help the animals and are not rude to people like some other places are.
When we were looking for a dog, at one local humane society the person who I talked to was very curt and bordered on rude. I thought, gee if you are like this to me, do you take care of the animals there and if you do how are you to a defenseless animal?
Rome is a great place.

Rome is the best shelter in the area. I have adopted many many pets there. Anyone know about how Spring Farm Care is?

For those of you who say Rome is the best, have you actually ventured to any of the other ones in the area?? The staff at the Utica Humane Society is actually wonderful to the animals and the customers. It's a few of the people who are on the board that are HORRIBLE!! I hope some of you are reading this right now. They don't even deserve to be there. There are a couple who are EXCEPTIONAL people and they love what they do. If you are seroiusly interrested in adopting an animal why don't you check out the Syracuse SPCA. They are going out of business & have a few hundred animals who are in dire need of a home. If there are any animals left when they have to close their doors, the poor things will be put to sleep. Wether their healthy or not. IF that's too far for you to go, call around & see what shelter has the most animals. That's the one you should adopt from.

Stevens swan is very good

The Rome Humane Society is wonderful! True they might not have all the space other shelters have, but the staff is marvelous! I was really turned off by the Steven Swan in Utica. Seemed like the staff was unfriendly and couldn t be bothered, at least the day I was there. And yes, the pets are checked by a vet and also neutered before they are adopted. I just adopted two cats from there and was very pleased! Does anyone know the status of the Syracuse SPCA? Are they looking for donations? I'd like to help!

When my husband and I first re-located back to Utica we went to adopt a dog from the Rome Humane Society. We picked up Charlie and they let us take him home immediatly. Things went well the first couple of days and then he started to get real aggressive, bit me once or twice on top of all the times he tried to bite me. On the more annoying rather than detrimental side he ate our mattress, a $400 ski jacket, couch cushions, etc. I made the awful decision after having my skin broken to bring him back after just a week. When I returned him, in emotional hysterics mind you as I am an animal lover and currently own 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 3 ferrets, the people working on the desk were extremely rude and the people who actually worked with the animals could not belive that he had been adopted out again. Apparently he had already been to two other homes and bit people there and then bit two of the workers in the Humane Society itself. I am all for rehabilitating dogs, but I feel they should have disclosed this information prior to use adopting Charlie. He never made it back on their website and thanks to them feel incredibly responsible for sealing that dog's fate. I had a lot of luck adopting my dog Sam from Tracy Percival who is the dog control officer in the Town of Ohio. She has a lovely lab mix named Honey available and personally I like the Herkimer Humane Society people, they are always happy to let you go in and browse around and have always answered any questions I have had about their animals.
