Back in High School I was privy to conversations involving Mike Arcuri, Dave Roefaro, Danny LaBella, and some others regarding the future of Utica/Oneida County Politics. Remember, these conversations took place back in the 70's so what we have today is the result of many years of planning, plotting, positioning, posturing, maneuvering, and deal making, all in an attempt to take over politics in this area as we know it today.

After graduation they all went on their way positioning themselves for the future. Arcuri went to law School, LaBella became a cop thanks to his father’s relationship with Benny Rotundo and Roefaro went into business. It all began with Roefaro being elected to the School Board and Arcuri being elected DA in the early/mid 90’s. Roefaro was young with lots of friends so winning a seat on the board was easy. Arcuri was a so-so lawyer barely making it but he had the looks and charisma that made JFK our 35th President so he took a shot at DA. The Republicans handed the seat to him putting up Norm Segal. Arcuri never had any serious competition for re-election because of his ties to a major player in Republican politics.

Enter Tony Picente and Joe Johnson, though not from the same graduating class both have long since been members of the club and have reaped the benefits of membership. LaBella, long time Utica cop was a Republican in order to secure security contracts for his family business with the State and County was living in Herkimer County. He moved to Oneida County and was elected County Legislator in 2005 as a stepping stone to higher office. The club suffered a couple of setbacks, first is when Roefaro lost in 2000 to Pat Donovan for Council President and again in 2006 when LaBella lost his bid for Sheriff. Since that time Roefaro has successfully run for the Council and was just elected as Mayor thanks to his connection to Arcuri. LaBella, despite his loss for Sheriff is still a Legislator and has just been named Public Safety Commissioner (big surprise) and will run for Sheriff in 2010. Johnson waited patiently for his turn at elected office and when Peter Manella resigned Joe was put into that position by Joe Griffo. When Griffo won the Senate, Picente was chosen by the Legislators, Democrats Johnson and LaBella leading the charge to fill out the term. When Arcuri won Congress he took Johnson with him to run his office putting Johnson into a very powerful position. In this past election Picente ran against Leon Koziol that had no chance of winning because Picente is a member of the club. Koziol was left hung out to dry just as they did him in when he ran against Griffo for Senate a year before. Arcuri wanted Picente as County Executive paying him back for running unopposed while DA.

This club is so tight nit that if anyone thinks they are going to gain membership they are sadly mistaken. People like Dan Trevisani and Bob Sullivan, very much a factor in the victory of Roefaro over Julian will never be "Made". They will be on the outer circle and when no longer needed they will be tossed aside. The same goes for Meola, Morehouse, Zecca, Giruzzi, Morris, Ford and some others, if they think for one minute that they will ever be "Made" then they are dreaming. As soon as one of them steps out of line or does something not blessed by the “Don” Arcuri they will be yesterday’s news as evidenced in the last election when someone that everyone picked as a sure thing lost because Arcuri wanted him out of the picture.

There are others that are protected by "Club Arcuri", a Republican Councilwoman, an Assemblywoman, and a DA. Those three are easy to put a name but there are more and if you really know area politics you will find them.

I know what I heard back in school and what we have all witnessed since, these guys think they are bigger than U.S. Steal.

So what! It's UTICA politics!
They're big fish in a little pond.
Utica is more of a septic tank.
It's a dying little 20th century city,
Maybe these boys can finally relieve it of it's misery and drain what's left of it for their own personal gain!

Now will we see if they can DO ANYTHING. The best part about all of this is when they all start fighting for the scraps

Danny can suck the life out of the City!
Mikey can say the eulogy for the City!
Roefaro can bury the City!

It looks like we have the first to step out of line, Bill Morehouse. Did you see his quote in today's OD?

" They don't know what to do with me", said Morehouse, who openly acknowledges he doesn't agree with many of the positions of the region's top Democrat, U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri of Utica.

Here's another step towards political extinction from the same story.

"If he puts every high school friend from East Utica there", then Morehouse would express his displeasure, he said.

Have no fear. They will be seen for what they are and will all be replaced in due time. What I think is most interesting is how Roefaro had "ALL THE ANSWERS" before the election, and now that he won, he can't seem to make any descision or answer questions without other people telling him what to do or say. I think that the citizens of Utica are in trouble with this guy in charge. I was personally very UNIMPRESSED with him when he spoke at the local Rotary club metting a few months ago.

nemo, what story did you read? I think there is a whole lot of reality written into it, everything Class of 77 talked about has happened. Has it not?

Great piece! At least backdoor Bob knows that he is not a part of the club and this works to his advantage. Poor Trev wants so desperately to be included but is too dumb to know that when they are done with him they will throw him to the curb.

Just like Danny Boy when he was running for Sheriff.
If he had some prepared speach in front of him, he sounded slightly intelligent,
BUT, when he was asked a candid, off the cuff question, without anytime for someone to prepare his response, then his true mentality came to the surface.
Class of 1977 huh?
