Faith-based group stretching "tentacles" to help solve crimes in Utica

A Friday night shooting in Cornhill.
A fatal shooting on Oneida Street.
A suspect at large potentially involved in a shots fired incident in downtown Utica.
It is this violence in the community that has brought city officials and religious leaders together to say:Thats enough.
We had a shooting right across the street from our church on Whitesboro Street in Utica, Greater Highway Deliverance Temple Pastor Hannah Burgess said.
From the incident came the conversation.
What came out the most is the frustration and anger, Burgess said.
Local law enforcement recognize they cant do it on their own, which is why Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced the partnership with the city and the Vision to Plant Coalition a group of about 25 faith-based organizations committed to working with police and promoting peace on the streets.
The reality is that the Utica Police Department cant do it alone, Palmieri said prior to the announcement Tuesday. The faith-based group their tentacles will reach farther than the police.
Utica police Chief Mark Williams echoed the mayors sentiment, noting that in order to solve crimes cooperation amongst victims and witnesses is paramount.
They have tentacles deep within the community, Williams said. They may not know the shooters, but they know mothers, grandmothers
Local religious leaders emphasized the need to go out in the community and bring the sense that the community cares for its residents.
We want to show people that we love them, that we care about what happens to them, said Pastor Drew Conover, who represents Lifepoint Church in Yorkville.Whatever happens in Utica ripples out to the surrounding community. I think we all need to come together on this.
Common Councilman Jerome McKinsey, D-5, previously has held shots fired forums to discuss the issue as well.
He could not immediately be reached for comment.
To bring more awareness to the new effort, city officials, religious leaders and the community plan to march starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday beginning at the intersection of James and Steuben streets.
Other organizations are encouraged to get involved, Burgess added.
This wont be the last time we come together, she said.
