I think it's a fabulous idea.....

DARTMOUTH, Mass.-- A sheriff has a controversial plan to make inmates pay for their time in prison.

Bristol County sheriff Thomas Hodgson has a problem with inmates squandering canteen money often provided by loved ones on candy and fancy sneakers.

"The government needs to look for ways to support people who are doing the right thing and send a clear message that if you don't, yes, you're going to get treated in regards to paying your way like everybody else," Hodgson said.

In 2002, he began charging inmates fees for everyday services. Rent was $5 a night, and a haircut was also $5. Medical visits required a $5 co-pay, and inmates had to pay $12.50 to take the GED test.

Hodgson ran the program for two years and got $750,000 in escrow.

A superior court judge ordered him to stop, but the sheriff has appealed and now the case is before the Supreme Judicial Court.

"It's time inmates start paying their way," Hodgson said.

It'll never work. They only arrest the poorest most helpless anyway. You don't see the law messing with people of means too often and coming out on top unless it's a slam dunk. They couldn't afford to keep all the correction officers and cops on the dole if they only had inmate money. And that is the heart of the system so this idea is out. Besides it's against the law which is why it was thrown out. Rmember inmates and their families vote too you cna only hang on so long fking everybody for money.

ha ha the poorest most helpless??? give me a break...these are the ones who are recieving all kinds of assistance from get go and are driving better cars than the average working person dressing in the designer clothes...there should be a charge for them that they themselves or immediate families are responsable for...this charge should be an additional one the families of the inmates still find ways to supply inmate monioes and recieving the collect calls.. we have got to do smething because what and we are doing things now is not and wont work for the long haul

Well you ignore dollars to pick up dimes then. You said it yourself "we have got to do smething because what and we are doing things now is not and wont work for the long haul".

The long haul was long ago. Warehousing humans for profit and political security does not work you are astute. The war on civilians by flashy militarized police forces doesn't work. A criminal justice system that ignores statistics to lock up an inordinate number of minorities doesn't seem to work either. What else doesn't work? How about police and prosecutors that are held responsible for using the law to handle personal matters in their favor despit civil rights? I'm saying let's all go hug an inmate or ex con or "welfare shrimp vuyin' filet-mignon sucking white/black trash pigs. Everyone knows how much we hate "them" right? I am just telling you and you just admitted that forever finding ways to pay millions of dollars for people to stand around and "work" watching other wastoids sleep "doesn't work". No matter how many new "hate taxes" you put on cigarettes, inmate phone calls, "undesirable" businesses, gambling, gas, air or water.
You "law and order at all costs and extravagences" types and union parasites better wake the fk up and smell the hot urine you're about to get hit in the face with! I'm not alone people are sick of paying half their income for too much of this 3 ring circus you call a government while most of the people on the dole are acting like they are some kind of royalty. We tried it that way now until the state turned "public safety" into the only growth industry here while any sane businesses left the area decades ago. I can think of a few states where crime isn't the primary focus of the government economy or tax bill. Ironically probably those states have higher education funding hmmm.

Stop. You're making way to much sense. I'm constantly trying to educate Uticans about their wasteful spending on UPD, UFD, DPW, and admin support. They don't see how much infrastructure capitol they're losing by wasting millions of dollars every year in jobs created by political greed. City officials justify the previous year's budget or their typical 3% raise (whatever it is around here) by purchasing unnecessary gadgets and tout their supposed effectiveness (ie surveillance trucks)

So, your tax dollars which support the poor, who support the inmates, who will then support the state prison will mean less taxes need to be collected?

Inmates should have to pay for incarceration. HOWEVER, they shouldn't be paid to be in prison which they currently are. The labor they provide at the facility level should be offset for their food, medical and housing.

Starve prisoners who refuse to work? Instead of thinking for ways to make your ideology effective, think of what would be the best way forward. By now we should all realize the unintended consequences out weight the original concepts. Research the number of inmates supported by taxpayers for non-violent offenses.

I agree inmates probably receive the worst medical treatment in America but the taxpayer bill doesn't reflect poor service because we lack of quality assurance to ensure the treatment paid for was received. The wealthy is robbing us blind in every avenue (EVEN PRISON) but the avg American doesn't know how or won't research and believes the talking points promoted by the wealthy so they can take more money.

This is NOT true. Inmates can NOT receive income tax on funds earned while in jail and that money is not taxed and can not be used as earned income.
