I guess there goes Utica's surplus. Oh that's right Utica owes over 60 million in debt. Get your piggy banks out again. Huge tax increase on the way to pay for new ambulances and owed school taxes.

Here's what I think.

If you pay your school taxes, in full and on time.

Then the city of Utica has to pay the Utica City School District the taxes owed for the people who didn't pay, aren't I in a way( as a city tax payer)paying my school taxes twice. The funds used to pay off the district could have been used for better city services.

State law mandates this, and I think it's a law that needs some changing. If it's because the city keeps the money on forclosed properties, then let the school district get a piece when that property is sold.

Also, if the city has to pay, why can't the county chip in on some of the money. We in Utica all pay Oneida County taxes too.

What about the renters who have 2,3, or even 4 children in the school district, what do they pay?

The bull that the landlords just have to raise their rents, is just that...BULL.

I just don't think this is fair to the tax payer that does pay!

Then ooticans should not keep electing corrupt politicians who only care about the "family & friends" program thats been going on for the last 80 years. Your last dumbina who was mayor...Roefaro..spent every stinkin' nickel and liquidated every reserve fund the city had to take care of his friends and family and the public safety slobs. Man up & live with it!!!

The state for the arterial project took 70 homes off the tax rolls and more and more people are abandoning properties and getting the hell out of this tax and spend disease our politicians have will little or no regard for the taxpayers most of whom are on fixed incomes. There fewer and fewer taxpayers to pay for the many refugees, special programs, welfare dwellers, and white mothers having black kids with absentee fathers. This city went to hell a long time ago and yes with Roefaro burying it and spending every nickel the city had has made it harder for taxpayers to get any kind of break and will pay more for any kind of services as the city has to borrowing more and more money just to make payroll and any money it borrows. We can the Roefaro for years of tax hikes to come as more and more people leave the city and county and it's endless hand in your pocket mentality but don't worry we get 300 refugees a year who come into Utica to fill abandoned homes they don't have to pay taxes on.

I simply love reading about bad financial news for the city. Its too bad the school district has to suffer for the political f***ups that go on at shitty hall by not having the tax money. I can't wait till the trials start next year, especially the Longo suit and see how the city worms & wiggles their way out of this.

It's only going to get worse. Time to get a third job or just abandon this house to and let the suckers still owning a home in Utica pay for e to. If your kid drops out of school you should be fines $2000 to pay for wasted taxes.

The problem is occurring because there are those in Utica not paying their school taxes and the city has to make up the difference. I'm no fan if Utica politics but put the blame where it belongs. On the people/businesses not paying their school taxes.

Correct but either way things are just going to get worse and worse as the tax base dwindles as more more more homeowners abandon homes to get out of this worthless hole in the ground via Roefaro who dug it deeper than ever before to bury us. Next years dept to the school board is over a million and on and on and on we go not to mention higher sewer rates fee's and taxes for every thing else under the sun as refugees and welfare dweller go scott free and the biggest contributors to our debt.

True, there will always be properties in arrears and the no. of tax exempt parcels. But I maintain when the last dumbina was mayor he gave the public safety unions the moon & the stars and completely drained the water fund. His fiscal irresponsibility not only borders on criminal, it is criminal. Every city should have a reserve fund of 1-3% of its budget. The pub. safety unions see that and droll comes out of their mouths. And the county better not give one nickel to the city.

You don't seem to get how this works.

You said corruption. There is no corruption when the following happens. The UCSD has no mechanism for collecting their own taxes so the city of Utica does that for them. At the end of the day the city of Utica has to give the UCSD all of what is due them whether the city was able to collect all of it or not. The city does not collect all of it because there are those who choose to not pay. The city covers any shortfall. It's just a bad deal for the city, not corruption.

If the UCSD wants to use the tax collection mechanism that the city has in place then the city should give only what they are able to collect to the district. Let the UCSD go after those who owe taxes rather than expecting the already overburdened city taxpayers to foot the bill.

Public unions and their benefits in general are a problem that will someday have to be faced. It doesn't begin and end with public safety. The number one driver of school tax increases is not books, computers or bricks and mortar. It's the teacher and administrator wage and benefit packages. Look at this:

There's plenty of blame for irresponsibility to go around. How about the school boards that approved these sweetheart deals?

I agree but the blame goes beyond city of Utica government.
